Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakia Scott.
Hi Nakia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey really began in 2018. At the time, I didn’t have a perfect plan — it was something that found me. I reached a point where I knew I had to bet on myself, so I quit my job and stepped into the unknown with nothing but faith in my own potential.
Not long after, I discovered my gift for creating oil paintings. What began as something personal quickly turned into a passion that connected me with people from all walks of life. Over the years, my art has reached many — including WNBA athletes, former NBA players, rappers, and others who saw something meaningful in my work.
Every painting, every client, and every moment of growth has shaped me. I’ve evolved creatively, professionally, and personally. My story is really about trusting myself, embracing change, and allowing my talent to open doors I never imagined.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not — nothing worth doing is ever easy. About a year into my journey, I experienced a major setback. I lost important business emails and accounts that were my main way of connecting with clients and handling orders. I had to start completely over.
It was discouraging and disappointing, and there were moments when it felt like everything I had built was slipping away. One of the hardest parts was finding the strength to keep going even when nothing seemed to work, and even when I went weeks without a single sale.
Still, I refused to give up on myself. That period taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of believing in my gift even when results weren’t showing yet. Those struggles ultimately made me stronger and pushed me to grow into who I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an oil painter who specializes in hyper-realistic portraits. I’m known for my attention to detail and the way I capture emotion and depth in my subjects.
What I’m most proud of is the fact that I built my craft from the ground up and kept going even when it was hard. That dedication and growth is what sets me apart as an artist.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the art industry becoming even more global, with artists reaching people far beyond their own cities through social media and digital platforms. For me personally, I plan to be one of the biggest artists to come out of Detroit. I see myself creating work for people all over the world, having my art in homes everywhere, hosting workshops, and inspiring the youth and the next generation of artists. That’s the direction I’m moving toward.
