Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Seelhoff.
Hi Samantha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Mend on the Move was founded by Joanne Ewald, who was inspired by her own journey of healing as a childhood abuse survivor. Built specifically to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and other forms of abuse, the organization provides employment opportunities in a supportive setting where jewelry making serves as a therapeutic activity. Through the creative process of crafting jewelry from recycled car parts, participants not only gain financial independence and rebuild confidence, but also find healing in the artful act itself—a process that fosters both sustainability and community engagement.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many small businesses and nonprofit organizations, Mend on the Move has faced challenging financial periods over the past 10 years while serving women in Metro Detroit. These difficulties have often stemmed from fluctuations and shifts in the broader economy.
Despite these obstacles, Mend on the Move has persevered and remained committed to its mission. The organization’s ability to continue its work is largely due to the unwavering support of the community. This support has come in various forms, including purchasing products, making donations, and receiving grants from local businesses and organizations.
The encouragement and backing from supporters play an essential role in Mend on the Move’s ongoing efforts. Their contributions are vital in enabling the organization to continue providing much-needed assistance to survivors participating in its program.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
About Mend on the Move:
Mend on the Move is a social enterprise dedicated to empowering women survivors of abuse through meaningful employment and creative expression. Our organization specializes in crafting unique, handmade jewelry and accessories using upcycled and repurposed materials, often sourced from the automotive industry. By transforming discarded items into beautiful, wearable art, we provide women with both sustainable income and the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
Specialization and Reputation:
We are known for our innovative approach to both jewelry making and social impact. Mend on the Move specializes in eco-friendly designs, utilizing materials such as seat leather, vinyl, and other discarded auto parts to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Our commitment to environmental sustainability sets us apart in the fashion and accessories market, as does our mission-driven program—every purchase directly supports women survivors on their journey to healing and independence.
What We Are Most Proud Of:
Our greatest source of pride is the transformation we witness in the lives of the women we serve. Mend on the Move provides a safe, nurturing environment where survivors can learn new skills, gain confidence, and support one another. The stories of resilience and growth among our team members inspire our work each day. We are proud to offer more than just employment—we offer a community of hope and a platform for personal empowerment.

Our innovative use of upcycled materials not only reduces waste but also symbolizes the possibility of renewal and reinvention for both our products and our people. We are deeply committed to transparency, fair wages, and trauma-informed support, ensuring that every aspect of our business aligns with our core values of compassion, creativity, and empowerment. Our unique blend of artistry, sustainability, and social mission makes Mend on the Move a standout organization in both the nonprofit and artisan communities.
How do you define success?
At the core of Mend on the Move’s mission is the empowerment of survivors. Success is reflected in each woman’s journey toward healing, confidence, and independence. It is seen in the skills they acquire, the creative expression they find, and the supportive community they build together.
