Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tareva Watts.

Hi Dr. Tareva, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
How I Became a Therapist: My Beginning

From the time I was a young girl, I felt a quiet calling tugging at me—an instinctive pull toward people. While other children ran around playing games, I found myself drawn to the emotions behind what others said. I didn’t have a word for it then, but I sensed early on that I was meant to listen, to understand, and to help.

Growing up, I often crossed paths with people who felt overwhelmed by their circumstances. Instead of turning away, I leaned in. Something in me knew it was my purpose to remind them that they were more than what they were going through. Even as a child, I tried to help others see the strength they carried inside—strength they often didn’t realize they had. I believed, and still believe, that every person has purpose, even when life makes it hard to see.

As I grew older, that quiet calling only became louder. I realized that what I felt wasn’t just empathy—it was direction. I wanted to guide people toward healing, hope, and the understanding that they could rise above anything.

Years later, when I finally stepped into the role of a mental health therapist, it felt less like a new beginning and more like a continuation of a journey I’d started long before. My path began with a young girl who believed in people—and who knew deep down that helping others discover their purpose was exactly what she was meant to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Along the road to becoming a therapist, I faced several challenges that tested my commitment. As a mother and wife, I often had to balance my family roles with the demands of school, training, and personal growth. Prioritizing everything at once wasn’t always easy. On top of that, living with a chronic autoimmune disease—MS—added another layer of difficulty, bringing moments of fatigue, uncertainty, and physical limitation. Still, each obstacle only strengthened my resolve, reminding me why I chose this path and who I hoped to help.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Advice I Wish I Knew When Starting Out
1. Give yourself grace. You won’t know everything at the beginning—and you’re not supposed to. Growth comes with time, experience, and compassion toward yourself.
2. Your authenticity is your greatest tool. Techniques matter, but who you are—your presence, your empathy, your humanity—will heal more than any textbook ever could.
3. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritize your own mental and physical well-being. Rest doesn’t slow you down; it sustains you.
4. You’ll never stop learning. Every client, every session, and every challenge will teach you something new. Stay open, curious, and humble.
5. Boundaries are not barriers. They protect you, your clients, and the integrity of the therapeutic relationship. Learn them early and honor them always.
6. Imposter syndrome is common—and normal. It shows up when you care deeply. Let it remind you that growth is happening, not that you’re unqualified.
7. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. Every breakthrough, every connection, every moment of trust built is meaningful. Don’t overlook them.
8. Your journey is uniquely yours. Don’t compare your path to others. Your pace, your struggles, and your strengths will shape you into the therapist you are meant to become.
