Today we’d like to introduce you to Kady Cox.
Hi Kady, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Recently accepted a new role on a campaign for a candidate running for U.S. Senator. My background is in politics, organizing, community building and nonprofit leadership. I am a graduate of Michigan State University and will be pursuing my Master’s of Public Administration and Policy at the University of Michigan next year. I started a nonprofit focused on diabetes awareness and prevention ten years ago while I was still a students at Michigan State University and just before I was selected to work in The White House in 2016. Most of how I got to where I am today has just been a constant and consistent effort of putting one foot in front of the other until I’ve built a solid foundation for myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I am not a great test taker, so I was on academic probation a lot in undergrad, the staff and academic advisors really believed in me and my potential so they worked to ensure I would not get kicked out. Where I did do well was the exposure and experience during my collegiate career, I was always traveling to conferences paid for by companies and networking with other students from different schools. I was able to study abroad and study away (out of state) during my undergrad career. Those experiences are what shaped me despite my considerably ‘bumpy road’.
As you know, we’re big fans of Cox Consulting, Raising Awareness with Students . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My consulting firm, I built to create more visibility for smaller nonprofits to get assistance with their legal compliance, filing paperwork, filling out the required forms, etc. Through my firm, I also offer nonprofit workshops as a contractor in the city of Detroit. My signature and most lucrative program is my Political Advocacy Training Academy program in which I partner with schools to incorporate programs to help high school aged students to see organizing as a viable career path.
With my nonprofit, Raising Awareness with Students, I started ten years ago due to my entire maternal side having diabetes. Seeing the effects first hand made me realize many things: this is a preventable disease and the amount of fast food restaurants on every corner in urban areas and lack of access to healthier eating options — disproportionately affects our demographic compared to others. This forces lower income families to prioritize convenience over long term health.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Next year, I’ll be adding a new title [to my resume] that I think will be the most rewarding title of my life.
