An Inspired Chat with Houston Patton of Detroit

Houston Patton shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Houston, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The other day, I was out shopping and a lady in the parking lot asked me for help, Her car wouldn’t start, we hooked up jumper cables, but that didn’t work. However, we both said a prayer together and eventually her car started. She was so happy and it was such a blessing, this was a true experience of joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello,
My name is Houston Patton and I am a saxophonist, composer, band leader, and teacher. I am from the metro Detroit area, and currently I am performing, creating/writing music, an teaching as much as I can, I am on a journey to make compelling, interesting, and accessible music to as many people as possible, My biggest goal right now is to bring my newest band “Hidden Nomination” to Europe for some shows.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was a saxophonist at heart! It took me a while to find my way back, but when I was a baby I would listen to saxophone players all the time and dance! The world influenced me to want to be an athletes or an engineer so i could have all the fame or money, but deep down music has always been what God gave me a gift for.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger to focus more on what I feel is the truth. I realize that I have spent to much time trying to navigate every suggestion, criticism, and critique that I often lose track of what I feel is real. Sometimes I would think that because someone is older than me or has more experience, that means that my own opinion and experiences don’t matter, but that is far from the truth. Life is a journey about being the best you that you can be, and if you consistently suppress yourself then that journey is a lot harder.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I believe the public version of me is the real me. This is a very important matter for me, it is so much harder to put on a mask and pretend to be something that you are not. There is so much peace and ease about being genuine. Although it can be tough at first, the reward of being yourself is priceless.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
It I knew I only had 10 years left, I would stop willingly doing things that I don’t want to do or that I feel like is a waste of time, If you’re in a situation where you are watching a clock because you’re dreading that activity, this is a really sad position to be in, because one day you will realize that you can’t get any of your time back,
