Daily Inspiration: Meet Cynthia Owens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Owens.

Hi Cynthia , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started this journey with a poem that I wrote about a young lady named Dream. She told a story about her life and her relationship with her mother. That one poem became a motivational journal for youth, The motivational journal birthed a for-profit business (Dream Keep It Moving) that offers journals, apparel, motivational speaking, and teaching. Years later I birthed my non-profit Dream K.I.M. Speaks. The non-profit offers 3 signature programs: A Dreams Tea, A Dream’s Experience, and A Dream’s Ride.

A Dream’s Tea is an empowerment and personal development program through a tea party experience. This program provides attendees with education, resources, and hands-on guidance to enhance self-esteem, mental and physical health, financial literacy, and goal-setting skills in an engaging and supportive environment.

A Dream’s Experience is a 5-week empowerment program designed for youth ages 14–24 who are nominated by members of their local community. This unique experience combines mentorship, personal development, and creative self-expression to help young people build confidence and celebrate their individuality.

A Dream’s Ride is designed to provide youth with meaningful exposure to experiences and opportunities they may not otherwise have access to due to economic barriers. Through curated outings, educational field trips, and cultural experiences, participants explore new environments, gain valuable life skills, and broaden their perspectives. The program encourages curiosity, builds confidence, and fosters a sense of possibility, empowering youth to envision and pursue opportunities beyond their immediate circumstances. By connecting participants with inspiring experiences, A Dream’s Ride nurtures personal growth, community awareness, and the belief that their dreams are achievable.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are days when I question whether I’m truly meant to do this work. In moments when I find myself surrounded by self-doubt, God always sends a reminder—a ram in the bush—to reassure me that He chose me to carry this torch.

God equipped me with the skills to execute the work, and because of that, the work itself comes naturally. The real challenge lies in finding the support needed to sustain it. The nonprofit world is highly competitive when it comes to funding. Grants are often awarded based on how well-known an organization is, how long it has been established, and how closely it aligns with specific funding priorities.

In my community, there is an abundance of organizations serving youth. Each one offers valuable programs and carries a mission that is both relevant and necessary for this generation. Yet, with only so many dollars available, resources are limited.

Despite these challenges, I firmly believe in the power of collaboration. There is strength in numbers. I’ve partnered with countless organizations to build relationships, share resources, and gain footing in the nonprofit space—all with the hope of positioning Dream K.I.M. Speaks to receive the funding it needs to grow and continue transforming lives.

Through it all, I remain grounded in faith and driven by purpose. This work is more than a mission—it’s a calling.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As the Workforce Specialist at Gerald R. Ford Job Corps in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I truly believe I am in the right place at the right time in my career. Each day, I have the privilege of helping young people—ages 16 to 24—navigate their path of self-discovery, develop skilled trades, and step confidently into adulthood as capable, equipped individuals.

My role also allows me to be a voice for the program within the community. I actively recruit students, engage employers, and build partnerships that strengthen our network of opportunity and support. Watching our students grow, succeed, and realize their potential is incredibly rewarding.

This work is more than a career—it’s a calling to empower the next generation to dream boldly, work skillfully, and move forward with purpose.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am a wife, a mother of 6, grandmother of 6. I love life, traveling, and servicing my community.

I am an Author, a youth advocate, motivational speaker, and teacher of all thing’s confidence, empowerment, and self-motivation.

I want readers to know that purpose often reveals itself through service. When we use our gifts to uplift others, we not only change lives—we discover more of who we are meant to be. I’m grateful for the opportunity to pour into young people and to remind them that their dreams are valid and achievable.
