Good morning Daniel, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Many people view content creation as a “not a real job” or have statements such as “must be nice”. They only see the end product and not all of the layers that go into it. For the content, it is about research, planning, pre-production setup, filming, editing, uploading, optimizing, thumbnail, and so much more. Beyond that, I do every aspect involved with the channel. Respond to every comment, email, and message. Create and manage every bit of content for my private Facebook group. Multiple livestreams every single week with time away from the family. On top of the business consultations, speaking engagements, trips to teach at barber expos, and much more.
Don’t get me wrong… I absolutely love every aspect of all of this! It’s just very misunderstood, and I do get why. Someone great at their job makes it look easy, especially in a field that many do not have experience in.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Daniel Command and I go by Dan C Bearded online. I am a content creator helping men with beard care, beard grooming, and anything facial hair related. YouTube is my main platform.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Nothing about the channel would be possible without my wife and best friend, Sam. She encouraged me to start the channel. She encouraged me to grow my beard longer. She demanded it was time to leave teaching and bet on myself to go all in with the channel. When I left teaching, I walked away from job security, a salary safety net, medical benefits, a retirement fund, and much more. We were NOT at a point of being fully finically stable, but Sam insisted that if I had an additional 7 hours a day to dedicate to the channel… that it would all work. She was beyond correct! Sam has done everything and anything to support the this career. She always knew and it’s the best feeling in the world to have someone like that with you.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No, there genuinely was not. I did not start the channel to pursue money, numbers, or a career. I started it to impress my wife. I started it to help others. I started it because I enjoyed the process. If numbers and money do not matter, why would I ever give up on something I enjoy? If you lead with passion, consistency, and you add value to people’s lives… the money will follow.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Without a doubt. I livestream on average 5-6 hours a week. I am constantly doing meetups and meeting community members. What you see is what I am. Some love and appreciate it, but others are not fans. I don’t let the praise or the hate change anything. With content creation especially, you realize people gravitate to your content the more authentic you are. People crave human connection, but it has to be real human connection. I love the freedom this career gives me to be my own unapologetic self.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
I have found goals based on numbers never actually satisfy. There are always magical goals that seem like they will change everything, but in reality I hit those goals and just create new ones. It’s said often, but it’s really true that the journey is the goal.
