Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Murphy.
Hi Alexis , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Fox and Hound Children’s Boutique with two reasons in mind.
Reason number one – I found a niche in our area that I just couldn’t let go of. I knew we needed a shop that offered more of an everyday wear for babies and kids. For years, we really didn’t have anything like it. There were maybe one or two stores that carried children’s clothing, but not the style I wanted to focus on. So, after working for other women-owned small businesses on Mackinac Island, I decided to take the leap and create something of my own.
Reason number two – It was a way for me to express my creative side and share that with other people. Through my window displays, merchandising, and buying, I get to really bring my passion to life. I’ve always loved earthy tones, timeless pieces, and clothing that feels special and can be passed down from sibling to sibling.
When you walk into my shop, you will feel the world I’ve created. It’s a little magical and fairytale-like, with a mix of woodsy and beachy vibes that bring a sense of peace and calmness to everyone who visits.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it’s ever been a completely smooth ride; I still face challenges every day. One of the biggest ones has been getting my name out there. I’ve been open for four years now, and I still have locals come in and say, “I didn’t know you were here!” That’s reality for so many small business owners, especially when you’re doing it all yourself.
Social media can only take you so far and reach so many people, no matter how hard you try. And of course, being in a tourist town brings its own challenges. The slow season comes every year, and with it, a tighter budget and the need to make sure everything stays aligned.
That’s where my mindset work has really come in. I’ve learned that business isn’t just about numbers – it’s about energy and belief. The more I focus on alignment and trust that everything is working out the way it’s meant to, the smoother things start to feel.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Fox and Hound Children’s Boutique is a blend of charm, cozy, and nature inspired. Think timeless pieces for adventurous little ones who love to explore. We specialize in carefully curated children’s clothing, toys, and accessories from small, unique brands you won’t find in every other store. Everything we carry is chosen with intention – neutral, natural and made to be shared and passed down with stories attached.
What sets us apart is the feeling when you walk in, it’s whimsical, calm, and full of imagination, like stepping into a storybook. We value connection and community over mass production, and I think that’s why families come back again and again. I want the readers to know that my boutique isn’t just a shop; it’s an experience. It’s a place to slow down, find something special, and feel inspired.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think over the next five to ten years, the children’s boutique industry will shift more towards the unique, small-batch, and sustainable brands. The kind of pieces you don’t find in big box stores. Parents are becoming more intentional with their purchases, choosing quality and meaning over fast fashion trends.
For my own business, I see it growing into a bigger location on a high-traffic street in our downtown area, creating even more visibility and space to expand what we offer. That could mean more inventory, more events, and an even stronger sense of community around my shop.
