Conversations with Katie Asher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Asher.

Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Slip. Vintage started out of a love for thrifting, for old things, for weird and unique things. My grandparents were collectors, and my mom and I were avid thrifters all through my childhood. It runs in the family, the thrill of the hunt, I guess! I started selling vintage on Instagram over 7 years ago as a “side hustle,” I had just wanted to make some extra cash and I figured I could monetize this hobby I had been basically doing every other day for years and years. I fell in love with finding homes for all the treasures I had found, and when a perfect store front fell into my lap, I had huge dreams to have a community space and retail store of my own. Slip. has been all that and more, and I am so grateful for every person who walks in my doors, and gives new life to old things.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Owning a business is such a rollercoaster, especially one that is so deeply personal. I feel the shop is an extension of myself, it is my life, my living, my personality, my style, and my home. I had no idea how to run a business, so every day is a learning experience. I feel lucky to have a supportive partner who helps me with the hurdles that I am unsure of, and keeps me grounded with my crazy ideas.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been lucky to have a store that has been doing its own thing, and being unique in that in Traverse City. I have been constantly changing and developing what I sell based on what people buy, and it’s always going to be a ever changing part of the business. What is “cool” today might not be cool tomorrow. But secondhand fashion is booming and we are just riding that sustainability wave for as long as we can. I hope it lasts forever, the desire to bypass fast fashion and be able to wear something unique and different and good for the environment.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my creativity has a lot to do with my success, it’s fueled me in my passion many times over, and is fulfilling in a way I never have felt in any job before.
