Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Lux.
Hi Nicholas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a funeral director by trade and decided It would be nice to be in a service industry, where the guests are happy to be there.
Block House started with watching my kids interact with other kids their age. They would go play outside and then watch or play video games. I figured there had to be something to this. I then talked with my good friend and co-owner of Block House about Esports. He is the new media professor at the local college. We would talk about it and then the college decided they wanted to start an Esports team and we pitched them idea of opening an Esports competition space in their new remodeled downtown building. We added a great dining experience so everyone could enjoy the eatertainment we provide. We have recently been working with the TCG community for events.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth would be the complete opposite of our journey. We opened about 5 days before the Covid shutdown and then have done everything we can to survive during the recession that has followed.
Our model has attracted other communities and universities. We opened our second location joining with the University of Olivet and have plans to expand to 3 other markets in the next 12 months.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Block House, we strive to create a remarkable experience for all our guests. We take the customer contract very seriously. When you come into a Block House you can expect great service, meals, drinks and of course fun.
We host international wine nights, craft BBQ events, monthly dinner and a movie nights, weekly trivia, karaoke and pancake nights for our college friends. We also host weekly Smash Brother tournaments, Magic the Gathering Commander and Draft events, along with our Esports Leagues.
We have worked with many universities, colleges, high schools and middle schools. We have done events with the Great Lakes Loons, called Field of Frames Fest and the Saginaw Spirit. The Field of Frames event had one of the biggest prize pools in the world and we will only grow that event with our great partnership with the Loons.
We are not just a restaurant but a destination for the adventurous and fun loving person inside all of us.
How do you define success?
I would define success for Block House is when a guest comes in sees everything we offer and has that wow factor in their eyes. Then after they enjoy a meal and maybe some gaming they leave and say I can’t wait to come back with all my friends. That’s success!
