Conversations with Lara Eenigenburg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lara Eenigenburg.

Hi Lara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2003 I graduated from Michigan College of Optometry, located at Ferris State University. I joined Dr. Jeffrey Byland, the then owner, at Excellence in Vision. He had recently relocated the practice from its original home on Main St and was looking for an associate who would eventually take over the practice.
Excellence in Vision is the original optometric office of Fremont, MI. It was founded over 100 years ago and passed on to each new generation of optometrist. I took the helm in January of 2021, after Dr. Byland made the decision to retire. Since that time I have worked to continue the pursuit of excellence in care and customer service. We strive to provide the most comprehensive vision care and top of the line customer service.
We currently have four doctors in the office. Myself, and three part time doctors. Between us, we have over 150 years of experience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Taking over after the pandemic was definitely an uphilll battle. Patients had gotten used to postponing care and staying home. I was also in the position to find a permanent replacement for Dr. Byland. This proved to be the biggest struggle. While I currently have 3 part-time doctors working with me, I have yet to find a long term replacement.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a primary care optometrist. While I provide care for the entire family, my passion is pediatric eyecare. My goal is to have every child have a comprehensive eye exam prior to entering pre-sch0ol. So many vision issues go undiagnosed and this can lead to years to struggle in school and self esteem issues for the child. Every year I host children’s vision week at the office. This is a week dedicated to children. We encourage them to come in for exams by offering give aways. The gifts include fun items as well as practical items like new glasses. Every child who completes a comprehensive vision examination this week, receives a gift.
I am also an InfantSee provider. This is a program that allows every child to receive a free eye exam prior to their first birthday. This exam serves to establish that the foundations for good vision are there. It also allows us to determine if there are any significant issues that need addressed. Parents simply need to ask for an Infantsee exam to get this benefit.
I like to think we are set apart from the other offices in town by our desire to provide the most complete and personalized care. We make every effort to get to know our patients as people as well as patients. We want to know what they do outside of the office so we can make the best recommendations for them.

What matters most to you? Why?
It is most imporant to me that I connect with each and every one of my patients so I know what their needs are and can provide them the absolute best eyecare possible.
