Life & Work with Jocelyn Parkhouse of West of Downtown Portland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Parkhouse.

Hi Jocelyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Honey Hair Co. was born from generations of barbers, cosmetologists, and business owners — a legacy deeply woven into my family and my heart. This wasn’t something I decided to do one day; it’s been part of my blood and my dream since I first entered this industry.

My grandpa Herm and his brother Kenny owned a barbershop together and Jerry, another brother, owned his own down the street in downtown Portland. Herm & Kenny eventually went on to own the Wagon Wheel in Portland. My aunt Cheryl, Herm’s daughter, still owns and operates her salon in the Lansing area — where my own career began. My mom was also a cosmetologist in Lansing for many years before she and my dad took over The Wheel.

After ten years of building my career in Lansing along side my Aunt, I never expected to return to Portland. But after starting my family, I felt a strong pull to come home — to raise my children and to work in the same community that raised me. When my dad offered me the chance to build on his vacant land, I knew it was divine timing.

What began as a personal goal grew into something much bigger — a haven for stylists and beauty professionals to feel at home, supported, and free to create. With my parents’ guidance, every detail was built with intention and heart.

And you can truly feel that heart when you walk through the doors. Nearly every person who visits comments on the energy inside — a warmth, peace, and positivity that can literally be felt the moment you step in. It’s the spirit of family, faith, and purpose that lives within these walls.

Honey Hair Co. is more than a salon — it’s legacy, love, and light brought to life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We were very fortunate to work with some of the best professionals in the area to get this build up and running as quickly as possible. Our builder, along with all of the local businesses in town, put in a ton of work and pulled through for us to make this a very smooth road. We ran into a few setbacks on timing along the way, but nothing major. Owe the biggest thank you for everyone who worked on this project!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a cosmetologist specializing in dimensional color and enhancing natural texture — from waves and curls to rich, lived-in tones that complement each client’s individuality. I also offer lash extensions, bridal hair, and makeup.

Education is a huge passion of mine; I love continuing to learn and have even had the honor of teaching at the cosmetology school where I began my career.

What I’m most proud of, though, are the relationships I’ve built behind the chair. The trust, connection, and genuine sense of belonging I create with my clients are what truly set me apart — and it’s the same warmth and family feel that fills Honey Hair Co.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You won’t build a full book overnight — it takes time, effort, and genuine connection. Focus on making every client feel seen and special, and the rest will follow. Keep investing in your education and never stop learning.

You’ll make mistakes, but each one will teach you something valuable. Support others in the industry, even those who might be considered your competition — there’s truly room for everyone to succeed. And above all, never lose sight of what matters most: your family and the life you’re building beyond the chair.
