Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Goodrich.
Hi Kim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had dreams. And, I want to clarify that. Not wishes, but dreams. I define a wish as something that you wait around and hope will happen, but a dream is something that you know in your heart you can take action toward and achieve.
At age 6, I had a mud doughnut shop in my back yard for the neighborhood kids, compete with fabric softener sprinkles for an extra 10 cents. (Luckily, I don’t think I poisoned anyone!). In middle and high school I achieved my dream of becoming an athlete competing on a national level. In college, I pursued acting and that dream led me to travel the world and eventually settle and raise a family in Southern California for many years, until our recent move to Michigan.
Several years after my husband and I moved to California, my dream changed. I was in my late twenties and my body was, quite literally, falling apart. I could not walk, sit, stand or even lay down with out pain. By the time I was in my early thirties I had been through several back surgeries, a knee surgery, ankle injuries, and the list goes on. What I dreamed of now, was health. The only times by body did not feel horrible was when I exercised, hard, at least 4 days per week. I learned much later, upon my oldest son being diagnosed with the same disability, that I had a condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a collagen disorder that causes the tissues throughout my body, muscles, skin and organs to be hyper mobile – more like silly putty than a rubber band – there was stretch, but no elasticity to snap back. The only thing that kept me held together was having super strong, and at the same time flexible muscles and a clean healthy diet that agreed with my digestive system. I had done this as a child athlete, and so I had no choice but to master my mindset and make it my mission to keep myself healthy.
I studied to become a personal trainer and started a fitness and nutritional business. I made my dream of health my career. It kept me accountable and brought joy as I was helping others to achieve their heath goals too. I knew that with my condition, it was important not just to get the aesthetic results but the foundational, functional strength that would serve me for life, so I chose National Academy of Sports Medicine’s systematic and scientific based programs for my certification and a large portion of my continuing education.
Living in Los Angeles, I also had the incredible opportunity to intern under and work alongside Michael Thurmond, celebrity trainer of the television show Extreme Makeover, and the 6 Week Body Makeover Retreat Program. I learned from him, a lifelong bodybuilder and all aspect health guru, what it took the fitness and nutrition industry another 20 years to catch up with as far as training and fueling yourself efficiently to get results.
As will happen with that achieved, another dream took its place. I became a mother. In doing so, I desperately wanted to be there for every moment, sharing in their joys, imparting my knowledge in them and raising my boys to be the best possible version of themselves I could. I decided to stay home and do just that. Somewhere along the way though, I lost part of, or dare I say, most of myself. I was no longer the passionate, optimistic, outgoing person my friends knew and my husband once married. I had become a shell, going through the motions of the day just to make it to the next.
I remember vividly the day my husband sat me down and told me I needed a break or we would. He sent me for a weekend at a dear friends house in Big Bear. I spent the whole time sitting in the hot tub, staring at eagles soaring over the peaceful lake and journaling. I came away knowing that self care was what was missing from my life. If that wasn’t priority number one, there would be nothing left to give my family.
Out of that, a new dream and a new business evolved, one where I helped women to become more confident, not only in their appearance but also their abilities. I started training again, but differently. My work with clients included a much deeper coaching aspect, on nutrition, finding the best way to fit fitness into their lives when they were not working out with me, and most importantly their mindset to address my clients health from every angle – mind and body, inside and out. I now teach my clients to create new habits, stretch their goals and grow their dreams. The goal is to give them a new approach with lifestyle choices that create long term, lasting results.
My mission is to lift people up, filtering out the noise, finding balance, giving them the tools, the training and the encouragement to make their potential a reality, and give them the energy and clarity to achieve what they are called in their hearts to do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned briefly before, along the way there have been struggles and challenges, from my own health challenges – I now have a total of nine surgeries under my belt, to juggling family priorities, relocating cross country, navigating covid and entering new stages of life. Each challenge though has reaffirmed my passion for helping others and brought new insight to my business and the way I coach.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Time 2 Shine, both in person and online, I help women to create sustainable, healthy lifestyles through behavior change coaching — supported by smart fitness, nourishing nutrition, and habits that actually last. This is not about perfection. It’s about creating a lifestyle that works for each client — one that supports their goals, their energy, and their well-being every single day.
I use a 3 step process to create sustainable change. We start by clarifying the current situation and the clients goals. We’ll look at where they are now — what’s working, what’s draining them, and what’s standing in their way. Together, we’ll build awareness, reset their mindset, and design realistic next steps that fit their, quite often, busy life.
In the second phase we begin to move and nourish. Clients learn how to support their body with fitness and nutrition that feels good — not punishing. Strength, mobility, and fueling themself for energy become tools to help clients do more of what they love.
From there, clients develop habits and systems that keep their progress going, even when life gets hectic and learn how to tune in to their body to know what it needs. This is where they reclaim consistency, confidence, and freedom in how they live.
It works because each person’s health journey is personal — and we designed it that way.
As a certified behavior change coach and experienced fitness and nutrition professional, I specialize in working with women who are ready to take control of their health on their own terms.
I also offer focused support for clients living with hypermobility, chronic conditions, or physical limitations — helping them to move safely, build strength, and improve energy without pain or fatigue.
Whether a client’s goal is more balance, better mobility, or renewed energy, together we will create a plan that aligns with their life — and helps them shine from the inside out.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have had the blessing of having a very supportive family to help me make this business, this dream, a reality and a success. My husband Tom, has given me the space and the grace to make mistakes, re-imagine and re-invent through challenges and I would not be where I am today without his support. I have had several coaches along the way, and several clients who too push me to keep growing and stepping out of my comfort zone – even as I challenge the, to do the same. It is definitely a team effort.
