Grace Rogers of Lake Orion on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Grace Rogers. Check out our conversation below.

Grace, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
It’s almost ridiculous how happy it makes me to do legos or to do a coloring book! I think because it I love color and both of these involve color and are very tactile. I love to turn on some of my favorite music, which is not the norm, upbeat classical! Then work on a lego project or color a picture. Currently I am working on Van Gogh’s Starry Night Lego. It’s so mesmerizing and therapeutic to just get lost in a project and the music. It helps my brain to quiet down and decompress as an introvert in an extrovert job.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been doing hair for over 20 years, and my own studio for 5, G3 Hair Design. Having the studio has allowed me to really focus on what I love most, color! I love color of all kinds, grey blending, blonde, rainbow. Being able to help people feel their most confident beautiful selves brings me joy daily. What’s different about a service with me is, is it’s a 360 experience. It’s not just about coloring your hair that day, its about what you are doing it home, even the pillowcase you are using, teaching you how to style it yourself and creating a look that works for your unique needs and desires.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Working with people in such an intimate way for so many years has really taught me allot. When you see someone consistently every 6 weeks you really build a relationship, that’s more consistent than visits with friends! I’ve been with people through many ups and downs of life, what is heart wrenching is to see is- so many brokenhearted when family or close friends prioritize opinions and views MORE than a relationship. Many tears have been shed in my chair over heart break when someone has broken off relationships due to different opinions. I so wish I could tell the people the true heartbreak they are causing and ask, “Is it worth it?’ Is hanging on to your options worth losing a person in your life? Many times the topics don’t even affect us daily! When did things change that we can’t “Agree to disagree”? I feel that a missing key is kindness, respect and thinking of others. The golden rule, “Do unto others as you would to yourself.” Let’s restore kindness to those around us, let people feel happy after being around us.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Going through hard things develops you as a person more than any success ever could! There are so many things I could say on this. But my personal take a way is, Choose your hard. If something is easy, you are not going to appreciate it the same as, when you fight tooth and nail for it. Success is hard, not being successful in the ways you want, is also hard. This is true not just in business but in personal life as well. Fighting through hard things, has taught me endurance, resilience, how to manage disappointment, how to have joy in failure, just to name the ones off the top of my head. Im sure I will learn more as I continue to grow through life as well, and that’s ok. In the end, choose your hard to fight for what you want.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Fads come and go with the seasons. You can tell because the pattern is similar every year, it’s cyclical. Just wrapped up a little differently than the last time and given shiny new name. For example in hair color, every fall/winter is going to have some shade of red, whether it’s golden, copper or red. With a fancy name, like “cowboy copper” etc. Then in the spring/summer, color is going to go lighter, maybe more on the cool side or warm side with a new “name”.
Real shifts in trends are much more interesting to me, and sometimes come from an unexpected place, that might be a movie or tv show, an economical shift in the world or change in technology. These influences can last for a few years, or change the entire trajectory of the industry. They are more than just a small shift in style, but new concepts and ideas.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. Being a type A firstborn, it’s hard for me to NOT give 100% in everything I do. In fact, I feel disappointed and grumpy if I can’t or shouldn’t. That’s way harder for me. Another reason, for me personally, is I try to live by the Bible verse, “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
