We recently had the chance to connect with Rebecca Tamm and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I firmly believe in the power of authenticity. The notion that “what you see is what you get” resonates deeply with my values, both on a personal side and a professional side. Transparency and genuine human connection has helped my business survive for over 2 decades so integrity is extremely important to me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Rebecca Tamm, owner of Michigan Massage and Wellness in Troy, Michigan. After more than 20 years as a massage therapist, and celebrating our 21st anniversary in October 2025, I can honestly say it feels like we’re just getting started!
At Michigan Massage and Wellness, we do things differently. No cookie-cutter 50-minute massages or pushy memberships; just customized, results-driven bodywork designed to help people move, feel, and live better in their bodies. From therapeutic deep tissue massage and restorative nervous system work to scar tissue therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, stretching and small group classes, we focus on whole-body wellness, and our business is one of quality, not quantity. We’re not a revolving door practice and our hope is that you never feel rushed with us.
We’re also passionate about helping the next generation of therapists grow. Through in-house training and mentorship, we teach advanced techniques like cupping, stretching, and prenatal massage. Kind of like a teaching hospital, but for massage therapists.
After 21 years, our mission is clearer than ever: raise the standard of care, build confident therapists, and help our clients feel not only get out of the pain cave, but stay out. Or at least give them the tools to help themselves in between their sessions with us.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Making it 21 years as a entrepreneur/small business owner is no small feat and making it 21 years working full time as a massage therapist/bodyworker is something to be celebrated when the average career span in this industry is 5 years. And I love what I do. I’ve learned so many different styles of bodywork over the last 2 decades which has helped sustain me, but now that I finally have my dream team of therapists, it’s time for me to step out of the treatment room because we have amazing people ready to grow their own skills and careers. Or as I lovingly say: I can build a whole army of Rebecca’s and we can fix all of the people!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When you own a business for over 20 years, everyone wants to throw in the towel at least one time.
Hiring troubles. Global pandemic shutting our doors for 3 months. Recession. Another recession. Injuries. Burnout. You name it, we’ve probably struggled with it. Earlier this year I had hit a wall and I was ready to be done done and just move on, but as much as I love Costco and have entertained my retirement job working in the bakery, I decided to give it ONE MORE TRY and now at the time of this article, I am so excited about the direction that we are headed, and the team that I have and we are just getting started!
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
A person is only as good as their word, and I think my friends would all agree that if someone makes a plan or a promise they should stick to it.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Paying into social security! I kid, I kid….
Only 10 years? I’d stop entertaining the people and things that don’t add value to my life. If I know my end date I’m going to make sure I’m spending the rest of those days seeing the world, being with my people, finding some new things to be excited about and enjoy.
