Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Byrd.
Hi Megan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up outside a small mountain town in Colorado, where a lack of cable TV led me to flood my family’s Netflix queue with Will & Grace DVDs. I idolized Grace Adler, and with the unshakable confidence of eighteen year old, I set out to become an interior designer. Rather than New York, I began my career in Denver—earning my degree from a celebrated local design program and honing my craft at several boutique firms before founding my own firm in 2017.
After fifteen years in one place, I was ready for reinvention. In 2021, I relocated CH Byrd to Detroit. The city’s unfamiliar rhythm and architectural grandeur—its Art Deco towers, Mies van der Rohe icons, and Beaux-Arts marvels—continue to inspire me daily. My design sensibility, ever evolving, now mirrors the city itself: rooted in history yet full of contrast, unpredictability, and soulful imperfection.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Interior design is a luxury service, which means it’s always at the mercy of the economy. There have been moments when work just vanished overnight. On top of that, the market has become so saturated—everyone has access to the same resources and inspiration, which can make it hard to stand out or justify your investments. It’s wild how decades of experience can get reduced to a vibe. But in a way, those challenges have pushed me to double down on what really matters: the ability to create spaces with substance and soul, and a point of view that can hold up beyond a social media post.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m the founder and lead designer of C.H. Byrd, a Detroit-based interior design studio. The only rule I hold firm to is that every space and every piece should have meaning to its owner. I’m most proud of building a practice that values authenticity and depth in a field often obsessed with appearances. What sets me apart is my ability to merge artistry with execution, and to create spaces that reflect who my clients are—not just how they want to look.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I have recently revived my passion for crafting and now no knick-knack in my home is safe from a paper mache makeover. I am also currently pursuing a certification as a Death Doula and hope to find a way to integrate my design knowledge into providing magical spaces for end of life care.
