Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Anne David.
Hi Mary Anne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A Lifelong Symphony
Music has always been in my life. I grew up in a family immersed in it, and that passion drives me today as the manager of Kawai Music Lesson Studios (formerly Evola Music).
At Kawai, we focus on providing a fun, inclusive, and comprehensive music education environment. For us, teaching isn’t just about the notes; it’s about using music as a tool to help students discover their talents and grow as individuals.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No journey is easy, and music education is no exception. At Kawai Music Lesson Studios, our instructors constantly work to create an emotionally supportive environment. We believe teaching is a partnership built on mutual respect. This means being patient and always honoring each student’s personal goals and pace. Overcoming everyday logistical and emotional challenges to keep the studio a space for joy and growth remains an ongoing effort.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What Readers Should Know About Our Studio
Our organization is Kawai Music Lesson Studios. We are Shelby Township’s largest music school, teaching hundreds of students from age 4 to 94.
We operate as a “full-service” music school, offering lessons in a wide range of instruments all in one location: Piano, Guitar, Bass, Voice, Violin, Cello, Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion.
What Sets Us Apart:
Tailored Instruction: We provide highly-qualified, warm, and friendly instructors who customize lessons based on the student’s needs, musical interests (from classical to rock/pop), and unique learning style.
Performance Opportunities: We offer an onsite recital hall with a concert grand piano for free, all-inclusive student recitals.
Motivation and Rewards: We are the only local school where students can earn trophies and certificates for passing musical tests—a powerful motivator for practice and achievement.
Flexible Commitment: We offer month-to-month lessons with no required long-term commitment, demonstrating our confidence in providing a positive learning environment.
Our Core Philosophy and Value
I am most proud that we focus on nurturing the individuality and personality of every student. We use music to help students develop a richer personality through self-expression.
Parents want a quality music education that respects their child’s unique needs while building culture and discipline. Music is the perfect vehicle for this.
Playing an instrument offers huge mental, physical, and social benefits, whether you are 4 or 94. It’s never too early or too late to start!
For Children and Teens: Music positively affects the development of their cognitive skills. It builds confidence, self-discipline, and inspires creativity. Students who study music do better in school and in life because music literally helps the brain grow.
For Adults and Seniors: Playing an instrument exercises the brain and helps fight memory loss. It also acts as a powerful stress reliever, helping to reduce stress and lower blood pressure.
We ensure every lesson is tailored to the individual, maximizing these incredible benefits for students of all ages and all skill and emotional levels.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see the music education industry remaining strong and highly relevant over the next 5-10 years, driven by a few key factors that transcend technology:
The Culture and Cognitive Imperative: Despite all the advances in computer technology, parents and adults still seek education in the “finer things of life.” Parents, in particular, remain deeply interested in providing their children with culture and giving them a head start on brain development at an early age. The research is undeniable: learning music teaches commitment, expands the areas of the brain that deal with math, science, and creativity, and builds confidence. This core value proposition will not change.
Essential Life Skills: Beyond academics, students learn commitment, gain confidence, and practice following through on a project when they master an instrument. These are foundational skills demanded in all areas of life and career.
Wellness and Joy for Adults: For adults and seniors, the desire to stay sharp and reduce stress is a major trend. They recognize that playing a musical instrument exercises the brain to fight memory loss, acts as a powerful stress reducer, and can lower blood pressure. Ultimately, the simple fact that it’s fun—a source of lifelong enjoyment and self-expression—ensures continued demand for music lessons.
In short, the industry’s future is secure because it offers a timeless, high-value blend of cognitive development, emotional expression, and cultural enrichment that no amount of technology can replace.
Pricing:
- Private Lesson Rate: The fee for private, one-on-one lessons is $32 for 30 minutes. Lessons are scheduled once a week.
- Introductory Special: We often run special introductory programs, such as our “$99 for 8 Weeks” special for Active Retirees, so it’s always best to call and ask about our current promotions.
- No Long-Term Commitment: We operate strictly on month-to-month lessons. Unlike many schools, we require no semester minimums or large upfront payments. If a student needs to stop, we simply require a 30-day notice. We want students here because they truly want to be here.
