Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Buccilli.
Hi Dan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Refinery Hair Company opened in 2019 and was born from my deep passion for the hair industry and a genuine desire to create something different — a space where stylists could truly love what they do and where clients could feel that energy the moment they walked through the door.
After years of working behind the chair, I saw firsthand how much a positive environment impacts both the stylist and the guest experience. I wanted to build a salon that celebrated artistry, growth, and connection, where every team member felt supported, inspired, and valued.
When my husband, David and I started Refinery Hair Co., our goal wasn’t just to open another salon — it was to build a community. A place where stylists and staff could grow their careers, feel proud of their craft, and where clients could relax knowing they were in the hands of people who truly cared.
That same vision naturally evolved into Refinery Head Spa, which opened in June 2025 in Grand Blanc, Michigan. I partnered with my dear friend and colleague, Alysse Reed, whose shared passion and belief in the vision made it all possible. Together, we brought Michigan its first of its kind, Japanese-inspired head spa — a sanctuary focused on restoring scalp health through relaxation, holistic care, and intentional touch.
The Head Spa allows us to expand what Refinery stands for — creating meaningful, restorative experiences that go beyond beauty and nurture overall well-being.
Together, Refinery Hair Company and Refinery Head Spa represent the heart of what I and we believe in — artistry, connection, and care for both the professionals who work with us and the clients we serve. That vision has guided everything we’ve done since day one, and it continues to shape who we are today
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like so many small businesses, we faced major challenges during the pandemic, in fact, we closed our doors exactly one year after it began. The economic uncertainty, changing client habits, and the competitive nature of our industry all played a part in those struggles.
But every challenge became a turning point. It pushed us to rethink, rebuild, and refocus on what truly makes Refinery special… our people, our culture, and our commitment to creating an exceptional experience for both guests and stylists.
We’ve found our success by staying true to our brand and our values. No matter how the industry shifts, that’s what grounds us and continues to move us forward.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Refinery Hair Company and Refinery Head Spa share one vision — to redefine beauty and wellness through artistry, authenticity, and an elevated client experience.
At Refinery Hair Company, we specialize in modern, lived-in color, precision cutting, extensions, customized transformations, massage therapy, and cosmetics. Our team is passionate about continued education and raising the standard of salon professionalism — creating a space where stylists can grow creatively while clients feel inspired, confident, and cared for. Every detail — from our customer service and high-end product lines to the atmosphere itself — is designed to make guests feel comfortable, understood, and excited about their look and their next visit.
Our newest venture, Refinery Head Spa, takes that same passion for beauty and expands it into the world of wellness. Opened in June 2025 in Grand Blanc, the spa has been a huge success. I partnered with my dear friend and colleague, Alysse Reed, whose shared vision and collaboration have made this dream a reality.
Refinery Head Spa is Michigan’s first Japanese-inspired scalp spa — a concept focused on restoring scalp health through relaxation and holistic care. We specialize in luxurious scalp rituals that combine advanced techniques with biodynamic Oway treatments, aromatherapy, acupressure, and steam therapy. It’s truly a facial for your scalp — and an experience unlike anything else.
What sets our brand apart is our balance of innovation and authenticity. We care deeply about the people behind the chair and the people in it. Every guest who visits us should feel seen, valued, and rejuvenated — whether they’re here for a fresh cut and color or a transformative head spa ritual.
Brand-wise, we’re most proud of building something that feels both intentional and heartfelt. Refinery isn’t just a salon or spa — it’s a culture built on community, creativity, and care.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success isn’t measured by numbers or awards. Its measured by people. True success is watching others grow, thrive, and find confidence in themselves. It’s about providing the resources, environment, and support they need to reach their goals and feel proud of what they do.
There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing someone step into their potential and knowing you played even a small part in helping them get there. That, to me, is the greatest form of success.
