Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Butler.
Hi Ann, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always loved crafting and DIY projects. About 15 years ago, I did my first craft show and was hooked. There’s nothing quite like watching someone light up over something you made and choose it as a gift for someone they love. Fast forward to a couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to open a brick-and-mortar store in downtown West Branch, and it’s been an incredible adventure ever since.
The Dirty Mitten isn’t your typical gift shop. It’s my little corner of Michigan creativity, filled with handmade treasures from local makers I get to work with every day. Every item has a story, from quirky home décor to Michigan-themed apparel, artisanal treats, and unique gifts you just can’t find anywhere else. When you walk through the store, it feels like stepping into a space where creativity, craftsmanship, and love for Michigan all come together in a fun and welcoming way.
What makes The Dirty Mitten so special to me isn’t just the amazing selection. It’s the people I get to work with and the community we’ve built. I’ve created a place where local makers can shine, where shoppers can connect with the artisans, and where everyone feels like part of the family. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift, a unique keepsake, or just a little Michigan magic to brighten your day, The Dirty Mitten makes every visit feel special. It’s the kind of place that leaves you smiling, inspired, and already planning your next trip back.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. The biggest challenge has been managing the slower seasons and the ongoing costs that come with running a brick-and-mortar store. I’ve learned to get creative during those times by constantly introducing new products and fresh ideas. It keeps things exciting and gives people a reason to stop in and see what’s new.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At my store, I focus on celebrating Michigan makers and all things handmade. We carry products from over 60 local creators, so every item on our shelves has a story behind it. From unique gifts and home décor to Michigan-themed apparel, everything is thoughtfully chosen to highlight creativity and craftsmanship from right here in our state.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built. Not just among our customers, but among the makers themselves. I love seeing small businesses grow because they have a place to showcase their work. What really sets us apart is that we’re more than a store; we’re a space that supports dreams, creativity, and the people behind the products.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think luck always plays a small part, but most of what’s happened has come from a mix of hard work, determination, and maybe a little bit of stubbornness. I’ve definitely had some good luck along the way, like being part of such an amazing community. The West Branch community has completely embraced me, The Dirty Mitten, our makers, and the girls who work with me. I like to think I hit the jackpot there.
