Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Western.
Hi Libby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Deane and Libby grew up in Michigan. Both have always had a love for the outdoors. The last twenty plus years they lived in Florida where they raised their kids. With the kids gone and on their own, they were looking for an adventure. Libby always knew she wanted to be back in northern MI, Deane loving Libby was good with that.
So after three long years of researching, and planning, they took that leap of faith. And here we are in Empire MI running the Sleeping Bear bed & breakfast. Living the dream as they say, and very grateful for family and friends old and new who have helped us in our journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, but some of the best roads are not paved. There is no reason to focus on the past.

We work very hard and believe in making all who stay with us, feel welcome. We love where we live and love to share with others. We also believe in taking care of what we have up here. We live an Eco friendly life and run our business that way. We support our local farmers and small businesses. We now have a level two EV charger free to our guests. We also have our Little Shop on property. It is a sweet place for all to create something to remember their stay with us. We also carry other MI artists.
Any big plans?
We try to add a little sumpin, sumpin each year to our amenities. This year it was new lights in the Chill Barn so our guests can enjoy more time in the barn. 2026 we are getting a new outdoor pizza over for all to use.
