Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Burgess-Smith.
Hi Gabrielle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my business at 18 years old — no investors, no roadmap, just talent, consistency, and a vision for something bigger. My first client was my college professor, and my second was an Atlanta news anchor who went on to appear on a national reality TV show. From there, everything took off. One project led to another, and WordSmith Communications became the foundation for what would grow into a career rooted in strategy, storytelling, and impact.
I hold a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and a doctorate — all in the field of communication, public relations, and media. My education gave me the technical foundation, but experience taught me how to make words move people, brands, and culture.
Today, I lead WordSmith Communications as a full-scale PR and marketing firm helping brands scale, secure media coverage, and show up with clarity and confidence. Outside of client work, I’m also a published scholar with several professional publications, including my forthcoming piece “Decolonizing the Digital: Afrofuturism, Endarkened Storywork, and African Epistemologies on Instagram,” set to release in the coming weeks.
At the end of the day, my work is about legacy — using strategy, storytelling, and truth to help others build something that lasts.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road worth traveling is ever smooth — but that’s what makes it exciting. I’ve definitely driven down some bumpy roads, but I’ve always made it to the other side with more clarity, confidence, and results to show for it.
Every challenge I’ve faced has strengthened how I lead and deliver. I’ve learned how to turn obstacles into strategy and setbacks into solutions — and that’s exactly why my clients experience smooth, successful outcomes. They get the benefit of my lessons without the bumps.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Wordsmith Communications?
WordSmith Communications is a boutique public relations, marketing, social media, and graphic design agency built on strategy, storytelling, and results. We help brands communicate with clarity, show up with confidence, and connect with the audiences that matter most.
We specialize in public relations, branding, social media strategy, content development, and design — from press releases and media pitching to full campaign execution, brand identity, and digital storytelling. Our clients range from entrepreneurs and small businesses to large organizations and government agencies, and we approach every project with the same mindset: precision, purpose, and measurable impact.
What sets WordSmith apart is our mix of creativity and credibility. We don’t just make things look good — we make them work. Every campaign, post, and design is rooted in research, guided by strategy, and executed with the kind of polish that gets noticed. My background across health, higher education, and corporate communications gives our clients an edge: we know how to move between worlds and make their message land in any space.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve built our reputation purely on results and relationships — no shortcuts, just consistent excellence. I started this business young, grew it through word-of-mouth, and turned it into a trusted name for those who want real strategy and creativity behind their visibility.
At WordSmith Communications, we don’t just create content — we build credibility, connection, and legacy.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people know me for my strategy, structure, and PR brain — but what often surprises them is how creative and spiritual my process really is. I’m deeply intuitive. I blend analytics with instinct, and I often see the story behind the story before it’s even written. That combination of strategy and intuition has guided not only my business decisions but also the way I help clients shape narratives that feel true.
Outside of PR, I’m also a published scholar who writes about culture, media, and identity — topics that feed directly into how I build campaigns with depth and meaning. It’s that mix — intellect, intuition, and intention — that makes my work what it is.
