Inspiring Conversations with Angela Powell of Whipzi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Powell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Whipzi’s story began during the pandemic when my kids and I started baking for fun. None of us had baked before, and we quickly ran into problems trying to flavor buttercreams, glazes, and other treats. My co-workers birthday was in April and the lockdowns started in March. She suffers from depression so I was concerned about her mental health around her birthday so my girls and I offered to make her a cake. The hardest part was adding flavors to the buttercream, adding too much or too little was a problem so I thought there had to be an easier way!”. That’s when the idea for Whipzi was born: flavored and colored powdered sugar that makes baking easier for everyone—whether you’re just starting or already a pro..

Whipzi flavored powdered sugars are all about making it easy to add flavor and color to your baked goods and drinks. Whether it’s frosting, macarons, glazes, royal icing, whipped cream, or even simple syrups and cold foams, you can replace regular powdered sugar 1:1 with Whipzi for a healthier, dye-free option. We use natural, plant-based ingredients like beta carotene, beet powder, and spirulina to add color without any artificial dyes. You can even get creative by using it for simple syrups in cocktails, mocktails, or lemonades!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! I took a leave of absence from work as I was working 15 hours a day trying to grow the business. I cannot afford to hire anyone so I do everything from packing orders, to wrapping pallets to social media content. Burnout happens quickly with start up companies. Also small business have such a hard time competing with companies like Amazon who offer free shipping. Shipping costs are so expensive.. Also financing, Hard to get small business loans and when you get the business it’s hard to finance the orders.

We’ve been impressed with Whipzi, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Whipzi was born during the pandemic when my kids and I started baking for fun — even though none of us had ever baked before. We quickly discovered how hard it was to add flavor to buttercreams, glazes, and whipped toppings without ruining the texture or taste. That challenge inspired me to create flavored powdered sugar— a simple, all-in-one solution that adds natural flavor and color to baked goods, drinks, and desserts in seconds.

We specialize in naturally flavored and colored powdered sugars that help bakers and professionals save time, reduce waste, and simplify their process — without sacrificing creativity or quality. What sets us apart is that Whipzi combines flavor, color, and sweetness in one ingredient, eliminating the need for multiple products and extra steps. Plus, we never use artificial dyes or flavors, keeping things clean and natural.

What I’m most proud of is how far Whipzi has come. I have no formal business or baking background — just a passion for making baking easier for everyone. I spent countless hours learning, experimenting, and building Whipzi from scratch, and today it’s sold in national retailers like World Market and Meijer with continued growth ahead.

Whipzi is proof that anyone can start a business if they have the passion and determination to see it through. I want readers to know that Whipzi isn’t just a product — it’s a reminder that creativity, persistence, and a love for what you do can turn a simple kitchen idea into something that inspires others.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I am grateful to the Instagram food creators and influencers who shared Whipzi early on, helping spread the word. I also owe thanks to a local business mentor for advice on running a business and connections. My food industry mentor, that I was assigned through the Specialty Food Association and to my friends and family who help pack orders when I can’t . Asking customers for feedback whether good or bad incase anything needed tweaking was beneficial also.
