Inspiring Conversations with Laura Anderson of Spartan Bookkeeping Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Anderson.

Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Spartan Bookkeeping Solutions was born out of a dream — a dream to be my own boss, to build something of my own, and to create a business that could grow alongside me and my family. But really, the story starts much earlier than that.
I grew up in a small, family-owned business where hard work wasn’t just encouraged — it was a way of life. My parents showed me what it meant to put in long hours, take pride in your work, and show up for people every single day. At just 17, I started handling the bookkeeping for our family business. I didn’t know it then, but that early experience would spark a lifelong passion for organization, problem-solving, and helping small businesses succeed.
After graduating from Michigan State University, I went on to build a successful career in Corporate America. I worked hard, thrived on challenges, and consistently ranked in the top percentage of every company I worked for. On paper, I was doing everything “right.” But as time went on — especially after the birth of my son — I began to feel the toll that came with the corporate world and the sacrifices you must make. I was ready for something different and finally had the courage and motivation to act.
I wanted to build something for myself instead of someone else — a business that reflected not only my professional experience and skills but also built on a genuine desire to support business owners like my own family worked so hard to do. So, I took a leap of faith and founded Spartan Bookkeeping Solutions. The name Spartan pays tribute to my alma mater, but also to the spirit of strength, resilience, and focus that drives me every day.
Now, I get to do what I love — helping business owners gain clarity, confidence, and peace of mind when it comes to their finances. Every client I work with inspires and amazes me of what people can create and do — the same entrepreneurial spirit, determination, and heart that inspired me to start this journey in the first place.
Spartan Bookkeeping Solutions isn’t just a business to me — it’s a dream realized, a reflection of my family’s values, and a commitment to helping others succeed while still making room for the things that matter most in life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any entrepreneur, the journey hasn’t been without challenges.

A challenge I’ve faced — and learned to embrace — is that many clients aren’t especially comfortable with technology. Since my business is run entirely remotely, it’s critical that I use remote tools. Instead of seeing this as a setback, I’ve made it part of my mission to simplify things for clients. Whether that means walking someone through a new system step by step, creating training tools, or finding easier ways to share financial information, I’ve learned to meet clients where they are and make bookkeeping feel approachable and stress-free.

I also found myself navigating multiple software integrations, each with its own technical quirks and complexities, in addition to various versions of Quickbooks desktop and online accounting software, which is ever evolving in capabilities.

Another challenge — and blessing — has been working with clients across a wide variety of industries. From construction to e-commerce to professional services, every business operates differently. That diversity has pushed me to adapt quickly, continuously learn, and stay agile in how I approach each project. It’s made me a stronger bookkeeper, a better communicator, and a more resourceful business owner.
