Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Kistler Kennels is a family owned and operated business that has been serving Mason County, Michigan for several years providing a home away from home for your furry friends. Following a devastating housefire in 2023, our family took ownership of Kistler Kennels when we purchased the property. Our family has committed to providing the same quality care that our clients have come to expect at our facility.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. Prior to our acquisition of the kennel, I had experience working for a dog breeder in Michigan that operated out of a large kennel. Although running a dog boarding business is a whole different animal. From figuring out state licensing and commercial insurance to managing accounting, marketing, customer service, janitorial duties, and daily operations, it was a steep learning curve. One of the biggest challenges was earning trust—both from pet owners and their pups. We have to prove that their dogs are safe, happy, and cared for like family. It isn’t always easy, but every wagging tail and returning customer reminded us why we continue to run this business.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a dog boarding facility that provides both overnight and daytime kenneling services. Our facility is not breed discriminant and welcome any size, shape, and breed of dog. Our facility has both indoor/outdoor kennels as well as indoor only kennels. Our largest kennels can accommodate multiple large dogs from the same household which helps reduce separation anxiety. Pets are just like a member of our family when staying at our facility and can expect multiple daily walks and plenty of individualized playtime in our fenced in kennel yard. Our team provides personalized care, including individualized feeding routines and administering medications as needed. We also offer light grooming which includes daily brushing and bathing at the conclusion of a pet’s stay. To help clients stay connected, we post images and videos of our guests on social media so owners can see how their pet is doing during their stay.

Traveling with family, discovering new places and faces.
