Meet Carolyn Lewis Ebbinghaus of Pickleball Outfitters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Lewis Ebbinghaus.

Hi Carolyn Lewis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started playing pickleball in 2006 and loved it so much that I began my own Pickleball Outfitters business. I sold paddles, bags, and balls out of the trunk of my car for several years. Then in 2015, I opened up my own pro shop located inside a local gym.
They had six indoor pickleball courts there, so it was a great place to set up. Gradually the word spread and because people loved the game they came to my store for gear, guidance and someone they could trust.
I began selling at tournaments around Michigan and played in them as well.
I played in the nationals in 2012 and won women’s singles gold (50+). The next year, my partner and I returned home with a silver medal, and two bronzes 5.0 (50+). And in 2017 my partner and I won women’s doubles silver (50+) at the U.S. Open.
I have also won a state Gold in the 5.0 mixed.
So, with selling and doing well in tournaments, I decided to become a Level II certified instructor so I could teach, sell and grow the sport of pickleball. It’s been a great ride.
I am thankful I got in at the right time and have a dedicated customer following.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At the beginning of my career, awareness of pickleball was minimal here in Michigan and all over the US as well. Not many had ever heard of the sport, much less played it.
Seasonal play in northern Michigan is limited to just a few months of outdoor play.

Now the paddle and gear technology is evolving rapidly. There is a lot of competition from big box stores and the internet.

We’ve been impressed with Pickleball Outfitters, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I offer only the paddles and gear that I believe in. I have years of experience . I specialize in teaching beginners and intermediate. I love my job
