Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Sanchez.
Hi Jose , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I studied marine biology in La Paz, BCS, Mexico with a focus in marine mammals. I started to work in environmental education and ecotourism in Baja California Sur in 1991. In 2003 I moved to Michigan and I worked winters in Baja California Sur and summer in The Apostle Island National Lake shore. In 2019/20 during COVID, when the world collapsed we realized it was our opportunity to our own small business, that is how we began our company, Pure Baja Travels LLC in Michigan, and like the whales we spend our late spring, summer, and fall in the northern latitudes and migrate south for the winter/early spring in The southern latitudes.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not bad but it has not been smooth either. We are not<span style=”font-family: "Times New Roman", sans-serif;”> marketing </span>specialist. As a small business, we have been learning as we walk the walk. We know we have a good product, but just struggle to promote our company in today’s media.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the most proud to have my visitors/travelers leave the Baja California Peninsula with a better understanding of not only the whales but all the components of their visit. community, environment, Mexico, etc.
We have the most sustainable camp in San Ignacio Lagoon, and we provide the best accommodations considering the location and remoteness of the area where we are located. All our energy is provided by solar energy, our food is from local sources, our bathrooms run compostable toilets (the waste gets fully composted in one year!), Our staff is only Mexicans and over 80 percent are from the lagoon (very small community, about 400 people ).
No other company in the lagoon does that!
What’s next?
Well, as part of our sustainability commitment we are to remain a small company. The whole idea is the cause the least impact from our visitors in the area. That is the hardest part of the business!! We have to plan for the best experience and the least impact for our visitors.
