Conversations with Ali Schrubba

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Schrubba.

Hi Ali, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was in middle school, my sister had an HP Point and Shoot Digital Camera. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I used to “borrow” it (I took it out of her room) and brought it to school sometimes to capture memories with my friends of what it was like to be a middle schooler in 2009-20011. My friends and I also used to make music videos in the halls after school while waiting for our rides or hanging out at a basketball game. I have always been known as the friend who people can rely on to capture the moments at a party, football game, whatever! Everyone got used to me essentially shoving a camera in their face and shouting “smile”!

Through the years I had a couple other small cameras but in 2017 with my adult money, I purchased my first real DSLR Cannon camera. It’s my baby. I started practicing shooting photos of my friends around college and boom, Ali Schrubba Photography was born. It has been an absolute blast growing my business and seeing myself grow and my returning clients.

In 2021, I opened Ali Renee Wedding Photography as wedding photos have been becoming my true passion of photography. Every time someone books me for their wedding day, I feel so overjoyed with honor to be chosen to capture the most important day of their lives. Recently, I taught my first public class called Basics of Photo Editing in Photoshop at the Lincoln Township Public Library, the largest library in my county. It was a huge success and I cannot wait to do more community driven events like that revolving around my passion.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The only true struggle I have come across is standing out against the crowd. My local area is pretty saturated with photographers of all levels of talent. Witt that being said, I have been doing pretty well branding myself as a natural light portrait photographer with a focus on affordability because everyone deserves excellent photos for their business portraits, weddings, senior pictures, and more.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I pride myself and am known for my natural light photos, edited with somewhat punchy/vibrant colors. I feel proud when my clients tell me they are happy and when I see my photos being used on their social media accounts and printed/hung on their walls.

My simple communication, contract, and personality is what sets me apart from others. I try to make booking with me as easy and painless as possible. I think offering my free 15 min phone or video consultations help ensure that my clients are comfortable with me before committing to a photoshoot.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
This is my passion but, I don’t do it full time! I am actually a front desk receptionist at a busy, local counseling office in Saint Joseph, Michigan.

My cousin DJ is a huge inspiration of mine. I have always looked up to his creativity and love for art, photography, graphic design, and music. I can safely say I follow in his footsteps.
