Conversations with Anne Ryan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Ryan.

Hi Anne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
While I’ve been involved in many creative and performance projects over the course of my life, my journey into aerial arts began in 2008, and it profoundly changed my life. It taught me to respect my body’s abilities and helped me understand my own boundaries in a new way. In 2012, I decided to share that passion by creating a safe space where others could learn, explore, play, and grow.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have had to learn everything along the way, from running a business to managing a physical space and building a community. In addition to the usual complication of starting a business from scratch, we had some big hurdle to overcome along the way. Three years after opening, we were forced to leave our original location with less than a month’s notice when the building was sold. It took 14 months to find a new space, complete construction, and have it professionally rigged. Then, just three years into that space, the pandemic hit and all gyms were required to close. I fully supported the closures, but reopening meant rethinking everything from class structure to safety protocols, which limited how many we could offer. But we made it through and our community is stronger than ever.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have kept a day job to help pay the bills (healthcare admin). That financial stability allows me to focus on growing the Aviary’s culture without having to make compromises based on money. I planted the seed and provided the soil, but it is the staff and students who are now nurturing it and helping it grow. Their dedication, creativity, and support are what keep the dream alive. I am deeply grateful to them for shaping the Aviary into the vibrant, welcoming community it is today. While our classes may focus on building strength and skills, our not-so-secret mission is to help adults make friends and rediscover the joy of play.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Being on stage! I’m a theater kid through and through.
