Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Kamin.
Hi Ken, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been an athlete and had a passion for sports from a young age. I played football, basketball, and ran track in high school and received awards, set school records, and gained regional recognition. I was offered a track scholarship when I was a senior, but I did not want to continue in school. That turned out to be one of my biggest mistakes, and I regretted it for a long time. After graduating I began a career in the tool and die trade. I married my wife of 34 years and we have 2 children, a son and a daughter. While they were growing up they were active in many sports. I enjoyed teaching them and helping them to become better athletes. I had a strong desire to coach, but with the job I had I could not be there on a consistent basis. As time went on I looked for ways that I could help kids become better athletes. I noticed that some kids had specialty coaches, so I researched how I could do just that. I contacted the National Academy of Sports Medicine and I completed their Personal Training Course and became certified. Now I could help young athletes become stronger, faster, and more agile. Later my attention was not only on athletes, but also on people recovering from injury, and posture issues that were causing them trouble. Also on people wanting to gain mobility, stability, endurance, tone muscle and lose weight. I then advanced in my training career and became a certified Corrective Exercise Specialist, and a Performance Enhancement Specialist. I worked part time at several gyms and health clubs as a personal trainer, such as the YMCA, Genesis Health Club, and LA Fitness, but I felt that I could do more good on my own. So I started my own travel training business, where I would train my clients where they felt most comfortable. It could be a park, a track, or there home where ever they desired. The time came that I had the opportunity to retire from my tool and die career at Ford Motor Company, so I did just that. At the time we lived in Kansas City Missouri. I retired and my wife and I moved back to Michigan and put a house on our property near Manistee. Since then I have become a Track coach and a Football coach at Manistee schools, and I continue to operate my mobile training business, Ken Kamin Personal Training.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggle that I faced, and probably my biggest obstacle was having the time to coach and conduct my business while still working at least 50 or more hours a week at my job, and having to change shifts frequently. It became very frustrating having to adjust my schedule and trying to continue to do the thing I love to do. I recall going to work and telling my co-workers my job is slowing me down, I can’t afford going to work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a athletic coach and a professional certified personal trainer.
I specialize in corrective exercise, performance enhancement, and health and wellness.
I am none for meeting my clients and athletes one on one, and helping them to reach there desired goals of fitness or performance.
I am most proud of helping client overcome there physical challenges, and having the ability to meet each individual client, and athlete where they are and creating that connection.
As a Trainer I will travel to my client, and meet them where they are most comfortable. As a coach I have many years of experience, and have the ability to connect with each individual.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I do take calculated risks at times. In most cases I have a back up plan if the risk fails. For instance if I want a client to perform some exercises that I know will help there situation, but I don’t know the client will attempt or progress to them. I always have back up exercises, sometimes back up- back up exercises. I am a bit of a risk taker at times, I have taken a lot of career risks over the years.
