Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodi McClain.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started on this journey to wellness when the door opened for me to become a massage therapist in 2002. I have since been on this wellness path seeking and searching for the best wellness care services and products that I could find to bring access to them in the city I lived in, Muskegon, MI. In January 2014 I had been in prayer for new direction within my business. At that time I only offered massage and Ionic foot detox services. One of my clients spoke that they were on their way to California for work and was going to try out Float therapy. They asked if I had heard of it, and I didn’t. After caring for them, I dove deep into the computer and looking into this float therapy she spoke of. I was hooked. I created a new business plan to expand services, booked my plane ticket to the Float Conference in Portland Oregon, paid for the How to build a float center training and also to become a nationally certified pool and spa operator. I immediately looked to see if I could experience this service and only found one in St Joe, MI. I booked my appointment and went out to float! It was a wonderful experience, but thought there had to be another one somewhere closer, then I found one in Lansing and floated my second time. It took so much of my pain away and I was smiling from ear to ear. I started seeking a new location and searching how I could get funding to expand. One evening I just finished my documents to submit for a loan when a facebook post came across my feed saying there was a mini shark tank opportunity to relocate your business to downtown Muskegon and to submit that evening electronic business plans. Five finalists would pitch their business in hopes to win the event and receive monies towards renovations, six months free rent at a location and also other business services. I decided to submit my plan and I was picked as one of the finalists. I competed and won the competition. However, during that process, the building owner that was supposed to have donated $16,000 towards renovations decided after four months into the remodeling process I started, that he was not going to renovate his building and pulled out of the program. It sent me into a very difficult position, but I continued to push forward. I lost my funding and grants that I had received with the Michigan’s Woman’s foundation and the Opportunity Council. I almost gave up. But I found Northern Initiatives Collaborative group and they agreed to help me purchase and build out property. I am very thankful to their help. I opened 3/19/19 exactly one year prior to covid shutting us down on March 13, 2020. We were closed for just over three months before being allowed to reopen. It has been a little challenging recovering as most of the loans they offered to keep businesses open as the country was opening up again began being due for payment. Although business is growing slowly, I am believing in strengthening my foundation and weathering these storms. Today, I believe we have the best massage therapists and employees in Muskegon. I love the family we have built. I continue to seek and search for the best wellness care services and hope to provide them at a reasonable cost to all. We give back to our Veterans’, First Responders, essential workers and students with special pricing year round to them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I listed earlier, gaining funding and then having that funding taken away, having to close business and still have to pay expenses, the challenges of finances in all aspects, personal wellness is the first cut most people remove when they are burdened financially.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I became a massage therapist in 2002, in 2009 was licensed in Massachusetts, in 2013 became licensed in Michigan, and in October 2025 became licensed in Florida. I presently maintain the MI and FL licenses. In 2014 I became certified in Oncology Massage. In 2020 I continued my education and became a certified Coaching the Body through Thai Body Work practitioner. I absolutely love people. I am a Born again Christian and truly believe in the many ways of healing with the laying on of hands. I believe this is my true calling. I have always lived in a way to help as many people as I can by ministering to mind, body and spirit. Our office is filled with plants and a home atmosphere. I did not want the stark medical feeling when people entered in our space. I wanted it to emit peace, safety, healing and relaxation.
What sets us apart from others is are focus goes beyond money or time. We truly focus on their needs above ours. If someone needs to cry we give them space, If they need space to decompress, we give them space. If they just need a nap to recoup, we give them space. One other way we are set apart from other businesses is that we embrace canines. Whether they are service related or emotional support, we started a program to care for Canines with our Respiratory Halo Therapy sessions, massage and emotion code sessions.
What I am most proud about is my staff. I believe that each and everyone of them had their path ordained to cross with us. We don’t have drama in our work environment even though there is drama in their homes. We all support and truly care for each other.
How do you define success?
Success to me is overcoming daily struggles and stresses while continuing to move forward without giving up. Looking to each challenge to build strength, courage, belief and stamina in our company and it’s vision to minister to our clients as a whole; mind, body. and spirit.
