Today we’d like to introduce you to Margeaux Appold.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Our journey has always centered around a deep appreciation for history and the art of creating experiences that make people feel something special.
When we first walked through the building – it was easy for us to see the possibilities of what it could be. The craftsmanship throughout is fascinating to us. Marble baseboards, hand carved woodwork, terrazzo flooring, intricate plasterwork – we were hooked. We knew from the beginning that we would only be limited by our imagination.
We have a great team – 2 couples – and everyone brings something unique and helpful to the table.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth – no, but not too bumpy either.
From day one, we worked with the city of Bay City to make sure we were covering all of our bases with regard to the processes for rezoning, repair, etc. Everyone on that end was so helpful and so invested in seeing our project come to life.
The building had deferred maintenance that needed to be addressed pretty quickly. The roof was leaking over the auditorium. During the repair phase, an unusually windy day caused the tarp covering the roof to come off before the final roofing was laid, and we had to immediately address water coming in. It was a stressful day – but notably it really showcased the resilience of our team and the ability to address anything, even if it is not the most ideal scenario.
We’ve also had to balance vision with practicality. We are dedicated to honoring the building’s original craftsmanship while simultaneously allowing it to function well for modern events. Each new obstacle is part of our story with this building, and with each project we wrap up, we feel more and more invested in the success of the space.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’ve got 4 owners of the space – so here are some details about each:
Kendra’s career is a nurse. We knew she’d be a huge asset to this project because nurses work with people who are feeling their worst and are stressed out – and they are natural problem solvers – event when the problem is not clear. She can handle an ever changing agenda. That has proven accurate again and again, as Kendra takes on any project she needs to in order to move the needle for this space.
Michael manages a team of sales reps for a North American food company for his day job, and has a lighting business on the side. He’s incredibly entrepreneurial and also very handy. If he doesn’t know how to fix it, he will learn. His openness to figuring things out has helped us so much in this venture.
Matt’s day job is working as a director of a sales distribution network for consumer goods company. Working in sales has brought a perspective to this process that is critical to getting people in the space and booking events. His daily work on contracts has additionally proven helpful in interpreting all of the differing contracts that come our way between contractors, vendors, and people renting the space from us.
Margeaux works as an executive assistant for a biosimilars company and her day to day work focuses heavily on corporate event planning and scheduling. This compliments the team well with regards to all of the administrative work involved in starting and running a business, plus provides the event planning perspective needed to round out the team.
What matters most to you?
Legacy.
Bay City’s history is so rich and fascinating. The lumber barons, industrialists, and ship builders who shaped the way that this city thrived at the turn of the century is ever present in many of the buildings that remain to this day.
This building was built during a boom time for our city, and the interior detail shows that no expense was spared when it was constructed 100 years ago.
We’ve have so many people tell us that they’ve driven by this space daily for years and never knew what was inside. We’re changing that. We love historic architecture and we love sharing this space with the community.
Our goal is to take an underutilized asset of our city and allow our friends, family, and neighbors in our community to feel and see the nostalgia of what this building was when it was built.
