Hi Jason, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My wife and I started buying rental properties over 20 years ago- starting with properties local to where we lived in Oakland County, Michigan but always wanted to branch out and acquire properties in Traverse City as we both loved visiting the area as kids each with our own parents
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It can be difficult to manage properties 4 hours from your principal residence but when we bought the Box we met Doug Petersen who was a long-term tenant of the property and he has managed the property for us ever since. Without Doug at the property- most days of the year- this wouldn’t have been possible
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My wife and I set out with a goal over 20 years ago to continue to acquire rental properties to help fund our retirement but more importantly we wanted to provide nice and safe properties for our tenants. Some owners do not provide good living conditions to the tenants, but we were and are committed to make sure our tenants/guests are well taken care of.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Buying good quality homes and investing in them in advance of just waiting for repairs to happen can save a lot of headaches. Also, location is everything- yes you pay more for the property, but the demand is so much higher in properties with good locations. That is why were so interested to be right in downtown Traverse City.
