Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Holtrop.
Brenda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My business partner and I were co-workers at a previous company. We and another friend used to talk about running our own business and what that might be—something creative we said. That came to be in the fall of 2023 when Kristi Handlogten spoke to the previous owner of ClothesLine Consignment in Byron Center. After 31 years in business, she (Connie) was ready to retire but was unable to find a buyer. After hiring Kristi with the intent that she could learn the business, we purchased ClothesLine in the summer of 2024.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have been very warmly welcomed and supported by the community here in Byron Center. That has been key to our smooth transition as the new owners of ClothesLine Consignment. The previous owner’s transparency of past knowledge and business practices also paved the way to the success. We are still learning as we build and make this business our own. But we have discovered a wonderful, caring clientele that really feels like our own little family here. Our success is truly due to their friendliness and support.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Both Kristi and I come from artistic/creative backgrounds. She has worked in a jewelry store and as an interior designer previously. I have worked in communication and as a graphic designer. These roles help us as we select products for our store, display merchandise and advertise our business. We have adopted the concept of “the boutique feel without the boutique price.” We strive to select and resell quality pieces for our customers. We are proud to be a women—owned business in our second year in Byron Center marketplace.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Childhood memory
As a child I used to love to create decorative displays in my own space. Whether that was a creative space for my Barbie dolls or a rearrangement of the playroom at my aunt’s house, I have always been creative (thanks to my mom!). I also grew up in a family—run business where I learned to respect and value our customers. People are looking for good customer service today and we are happy to provide it.
