Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Flanders-Krogman.
Hi Anna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From a young age, I’ve always been captivated by the details that make a space feel magical. It wasn’t just about working with pretty things; it was about atmosphere and how colors, textures, light, and music could make people feel something. I’ve always had an eye for detail and an appreciation for the finer things in life, but even more so, I’ve loved creating moments that feel intentional and timeless.
Growing up, my church became the first place where I could explore my creative side. They hosted monthly events like jazz and local music nights, and I was given full freedom to dream up the theme, decorate the tables, and even plan the food to match. I also loved decorating the church for the seasons, with Christmas always being my favorite. I found so much joy in adding thoughtful, unique details while keeping everything cohesive and inviting. Looking back, I realize I was developing my design eye even then, around age 13 or 14, without even knowing it.
After high school, I attended Central Michigan University, where I later graduated and began my full-time role as Assistant Director in the Career Development Center. I truly love what I do because I get to help students find meaningful work, explore creative career paths, and step confidently into their futures. It is rewarding and deeply connected to the same part of me that loves seeing potential come to life, whether it is in a person or in a space.
While planning my own wedding, I rediscovered my spark for creating beautiful, intentional environments. That experience became the foundation for Anna & Co Creative, which I launched in the fall of 2024. What began as a creative outlet has quickly become something so much more: a way to blend artistry, hospitality, and storytelling through decor and design. I am endlessly grateful for every client who has trusted me to bring their vision to life and for how this journey continues to grow.
I have always been drawn to architecturally inspiring venues and the way a space’s natural environment can set the tone for an entire event. I love working with what already exists, letting the textures, colors, and structure guide the design instead of trying to change everything to fit a specific aesthetic. My favorite spaces often have a sense of history and timelessness, places where the architecture speaks for itself. To me, sophistication is not about extravagance; it is about intention. It is the way soft candlelight reflects off gold accents, how a simple floral arrangement can bring life to an aged wooden table, or how natural textures like linen and stone complement the elegance of a crystal glass. I am especially inspired by venues with Italian influence, spaces that blend classic beauty with warmth and comfort, where every detail, from the lighting to the table setting, feels both elevated and inviting.
My long-term dream is to open a venue here in Central Michigan, one that reflects those same values: architecturally beautiful, welcoming, and versatile enough to host a few hundred guests. I picture a space with a top-tier coffee bar and the kind of charm that feels both elevated and effortless, a place that tells its own story and allows every event to take on a life of its own.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road, but like any new business, there have definitely been lessons along the way. One of the biggest things I’ve learned is the importance of clear contracts and communication. When you’re starting out, you’re just excited to create and collaborate, but it’s so important to protect your time, your work, and your boundaries.
My biggest learning curve, though, has been on the marketing side. I’ve never been someone who naturally gravitates toward social media. I much prefer genuine connection and word-of-mouth growth, but I’ve come to appreciate how powerful those platforms can be when used well. I’m learning how to approach them in a way that still feels authentic to me and to my brand.
Balancing everything has also been a challenge. I currently work full time at CMU while running Anna & Co Creative, and lead worship bi-weekly at my church, so finding that rhythm between structure and creativity can be tricky. I’m continually learning how to stay organized, protect my energy, and make sure my creative spark doesn’t get lost in the busyness of it all.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Right now, Anna & Co Creative is primarily a decor rental business, but I am gradually expanding into the creative design side of weddings. My goal is to work closely with brides to take their vision and bring it to life, curating everything from the atmosphere to the details that make the day feel uniquely theirs. I currently specialize in designing tablescapes and styling event spaces, and I also assist with coordination to help ensure everything flows seamlessly.
Some of the work I am most proud of has been through the styled shoots I have hosted and collaborated on this past year. They have allowed me to stretch creatively, experiment with new design concepts, and build relationships with other talented local vendors. Seeing those ideas come to life in a tangible, beautiful way has been incredibly rewarding.
What I believe sets me apart is my ability to blend affordability with elegance. I love showing that you do not need an unlimited budget to create something that feels refined and memorable. It is about pairing creativity with practicality and finding ways to elevate a space through thoughtful design choices and attention to detail. I take pride in seeing both the big picture and the smallest touches that truly make an event feel seamless and intentional. For example, I might spend time choosing candle heights that balance the table’s visual flow, matching metals across decor pieces, or layering textures through linens and florals to create warmth and depth. Those are the elements that transform a gathering into an experience people remember. There are so many details people might overlook that truly make an event feel cohesive and create an amazing experience for everyone involved. I take pride in noticing those details and ensuring that every piece, no matter how small, contributes to something beautiful and lasting.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Mount Pleasant is the energy that comes from it being a college town. There is always something happening, and the presence of students keeps the community feeling young, lively, and diverse. I especially love seeing how the international student community has grown in recent years. For example, there are so many Indian students at Central Michigan University, and it has been amazing to learn more about their culture and even see local businesses, like the Indian restaurant ‘Idli Dosa’ in the University Center on campus, flourish because of their influence.
What I like least is that, since Mount Pleasant is still a smaller town, there is not always a wide variety of entertainment options or unique spots to explore. I would love to see more creative spaces, small businesses, and venues pop up here in the future to add to the charm that already exists.
