Inspiring Conversations with Meredith Schindler of Ann Arbor Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Schindler.

Hi Meredith, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ann Arbor Academy is an independent, gender inclusive day school for students in grades K through 12, as well as post graduate students in our 13th Year program. Ann Arbor Academy’s mission is to allow students with divergent learning styles to flourish in an environment which promotes social and academic confidence and growth. Our students have learning differences and disabilities including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, OCD, FASD, and more. Our program is college preparatory, and it is designed to help students thrive and find their strengths. We emphasize learning by doing, and have a strong program in the fine and performing arts. Our small class sizes and specialized instructors help students reach their academic potential and blossom in a safe, supportive school environment.

Ann Arbor Academy was founded in the mid 1990s to help meet the needs of students who were being left behind by the traditional public school approach to learning. The vision was then, and remains today, to teach how our students learn, and to help them find and build on their strengths.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ann Arbor Academy has thrived since its inception, largely due to a strong founding vision and careful management of resources. Our commitment to our students is profound, and the impact this kind of education can have on the life of a child is incredible.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Ann Arbor Academy’s students take a risk coming through our doors at all. They have typically had difficult experiences at previous schools, but their resilience and strength is truly awe-inspiring. We take our cues as an institution from our students – if a risk is likely to help us provide this education for more students, or do this better for our current students, then we take a risk. We have continued to grow and we are expanding our facilities due to our commitment to meeting the needs of our learners.
