Today we’d like to introduce you to David Shock.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been in coffee, food and beverage for over 20 years. When I met my wife in 2012, her parents owned a small coffee roasting business on their property in rural NH since 1995. We decided the move the business to Detroit in 2019 and have since grown the business to include over 50 wholesale partners, 4 cafes and 2 more coming soon. We have also upgraded 30 year old roaster to a brand new 40kilo all electric Typhoon roaster that are handmade in Prague.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We started roasting right before the pandemic so when that hit our wholesale to restaurant plans immediately dried up. I worked another job managing a restaurant while my wife continued to teach for those 2 years until the pandemic ended and a former bagel shop in Corktown became available. I had to learn how to bake and make dough with no previous experience. The first 2 years were really rough. Money was always tight and it was really hard to cover all our expenses. I would often bake from 5 am til 1 then run deliveries til the evening.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We’re a wholesale Coffee Roastery and equipment and service provider. We have a bake house that specializes in bagels that are cold fermented and baked fresh daily.
What matters most to you? Why?
Creating a space that is welcoming to everyone. We think of ourselves as a hospitality company that happens to roast coffee and bake bagels.
