Jinx of Flint on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jinx. Check out our conversation below.

Jinx, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Currently, I’ve been watching Tulsa King on Paramount Plus haha, I’m on my 3rd rewatch of the series while prepping for season 3.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jinx, I’m an Artist from Flint, Michigan, currently I’m working on my debut album “Thorns”, the first single “Tonight” is dropping on October 31st, my dad got me into music when I was a kid, we used to sit around the computer and listen to Jay-Z, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Wiz Khalifa, all that, when I heard Not Afraid by Eminem, it made me want to pursue a career in music, as a Hispanic-American rapper its kinda difficult to find your place in the culture, but Eminem’s music proved to me it could be done, no matter your heritage. My father passed earlier this year, but him and I talked a bit about “Thorns”, so since his passing its been my lifes mission to finish the album.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was just this Nerdy kid from Flint Michigan with a dream of being an artist haha, but before that I did want to be an actor. The world will always tell you what you have to be, but its always up to you to break the mold, and the expectations.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When my dad passed, I was at my absolute lowest point in life, I was planning on quitting music cause it felt like my biggest supporter was now gone. My friend and collaborator MC CUBED sent me this song he had been working on, it was called Side Of Me, there was an open verse, and I just wrote to it, got all of my feelings out, went down to my basement to record it, and as I listened back I realized not only that I shouldn’t quit, I realized I needed help.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I like to believe it is haha, I believe in being yourself unapologetically, if you have to cry, cry. If you’re mad at the world, get it out on a song, if you’re in a great mood, show it.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
A little bit of A, and a little bit of B haha, I’ve never had formal training, I learned everything as I went, but when I lived in Arizona for a couple years I did have a Yale Award Winning Choir teacher say that I could go somewhere with my music, my dad wanted me to pursue music, but my hearts always been in music, so it’s kind of a toss up haha.
