Exploring Life & Business with Rikki Hudson of Hudson Styling Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rikki Hudson.

Hi Rikki, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the beauty industry has always been rooted in artistry. I actually started in the fine arts, which gave me a deep appreciation for detail, composition, and creativity. That path eventually took me to New York, where I worked backstage on runway shows and in high-pressure environments that demanded both precision and innovation.
When I came back to Detroit, I saw an opportunity to bring that same level of artistry and professionalism to my own community. That’s how Hudson Styling Co. was born. From day one, I wanted to create more than just a salon — I wanted to build a space where beauty, sustainability, and wellness intersect.
Today, we’re proud to be an Aveda-aligned, Green Circle Salon, which means we operate as a zero-waste, environmentally conscious business. But beyond the products and the eco-practices, what really sets us apart is our commitment to elevating our craft while giving both our team and our guests an experience that feels creative, intentional, and inspiring. It’s been a journey full of challenges and growth, but every step has reinforced why I started: to bring high-end artistry and sustainable beauty to Detroit.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Opening a salon is equal parts passion and perseverance, and there have been moments that tested both.

But what I’ve learned is that every challenge has shaped us into a stronger salon. We’ve become incredibly resourceful and built a culture where resilience and creativity go hand in hand. The struggles have ultimately made Hudson Styling Co. more authentic — we’re not just about beauty, we’re about building something lasting for our team, our clients, and our community.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hudson Styling Co. is more than a salon — it’s a space where artistry, wellness, and sustainability meet. Every guest who comes in can feel good knowing their beauty service is not only about looking their best, but also about supporting a healthier planet.
We specialize in high-end color, cutting, and bridal/event styling, but what we’re truly known for is our artistry and attention to detail. My background in fine arts and New York runway styling has shaped the creative culture of the salon — every service is approached with that same sense of craft and precision.
What sets us apart is our consistency and our intentionality. From the way we source and recycle products, to the way we train our team, to the way we design our guest experience, everything is about elevating beauty in a way that feels luxurious, modern, and conscious.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Hudson Styling Co. has become an anchor in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. We’ve built a reputation for being professional and artistic, while also deeply connected to our community. For our clients — professionals, doctors, lawyers, city officials, creatives — HSC is a place they can trust to deliver excellence every time.
What I’d love readers to know is that Hudson Styling Co. isn’t just where you get your hair done. It’s where you can experience artistry, sustainability, and a little bit of New York runway energy — right here in Detroit.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Detroit is its ingenuity, resilience, and creativity. This city has such a strong spirit — you feel it in the people, the art, the small businesses, and the way communities support one another. There’s an authenticity here that you don’t find everywhere, and that’s what makes building a business in Detroit so rewarding.

If I had to choose something I like least, it would be the ongoing challenges small business owners face with things like high operating costs and the hurdles of redevelopment. That said, I truly believe the resilience of Detroiters is what continues to push the city forward, and it’s why I’m proud to be building Hudson Styling Co. here.
