Hidden Gems: Meet Lakota Tidd of Top home improvements

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakota Tidd.

Hi Lakota , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my company when I was 21. Now 27, I turned a dream launched in my mother’s garage into Top Home Improvements, a $13M home remodeling company ranked #194 on Remodeler Magazine’s Top 500. As a college dropout who left a secure job at 21, I defied expectations, building an 80-person team and transforming over 5,000 homes with high-end windows, roofs, and bathrooms. In an industry dominated by older professionals, my youth and innovative approach—using cutting-edge project management tools and sustainable materials, we have disrupted the status quo, delivering projects faster while maintaining a great client satisfaction rate.
My impact extends beyond business. For every sale, we donate a book or toy to children with cancer at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, supporting many kids annually. Our “Showers for Soldiers” program gifts a free bathroom remodel to a veteran each year, honoring their service. These initiatives, alongside creating 80+ local jobs, reflect my commitment to community and purpose-driven leadership.
My vision to build Michigan’s largest remodeling company by 2030, integrating AI-driven design and sustainable practices, positions me to shape the industry’s future. As a young father and leader, I inspire my diverse team to grow, lead, and give back, proving that age is no barrier to transformative impact.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, starting my company was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done—it felt like pushing a boulder uphill in the dark sometimes. The early days were a grind, with endless uncertainty and bootstrapping everything on a shoestring budget. But the real challenge? Leading a team of folks way older and more experienced than me. I was in my mid-20s, fresh out of the gate, and suddenly responsible for guiding people who’d been in the game for decades. I over came that and I consider myself a powerful leader for all. I also knocked doors alone through michigans harsh winter to scavenge for business. Looking back, those struggles shaped everything. They taught me resilience, how to earn respect through sheer grit, and that underestimation is just fuel if you channel it right.

As you know, we’re big fans of Top home improvements . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Top Home Improvements, we’re a family-driven home remodeling powerhouse based in Lowell, Michigan, now in kemtwood! transforming houses into dream homes since I founded it at 21 in my mom’s garage alongside my partner Derek. What started as a scrappy operation has scaled to over 80 employees and $13 million in annual revenue, serving families across West Michigan with everything from full kitchen and bathroom overhauls to custom window installations, roofing, siding, and energy-efficient upgrades. We specialize in high-end, personalized remodels that blend timeless craftsmanship with modern tech—like smart home integrations and sustainable materials—while keeping projects on time and under budget.
We’re known for our “No-Surprises Guarantee”: transparent pricing from day one, no hidden fees, and a white-glove install process that minimizes disruption to your life. Our teams are local pros with decades of combined experience (yes, even if the boss is the young guy calling the shots), and we back every project with a lifetime workmanship warranty. We’ve cracked the code on scaling without losing that personal touch, delivering 98% customer satisfaction rates that speak louder than any ad.
Brand-wise, im most proud of that we’ve donated custom shower remodels through our “Showers for Soldiers” program to veterans every year, outfitting adaptive bathrooms for accessibility, and we’ve funneled toys to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital via employee-led fundraisers. It’s not marketing fluff—it’s who we are, turning profits into real impact and building a legacy of trust.
