Today we’d like to introduce you to Darcy Petersen.
Hi Darcy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Maid in Battle Creek with a simple mission — to provide dependable, high-quality cleaning while building something meaningful for myself, my family, and other women in our community. What began as just me cleaning a handful of homes quickly turned into something much bigger than I ever imagined. Word spread, our reputation grew, and before long, we found ourselves expanding into commercial spaces and partnering with local businesses.
Over time, the company evolved into a full-scale commercial cleaning service, something we hadn’t initially planned but are incredibly proud of. We now have dedicated first- and second-shift teams, and we’re trusted to care for offices, industrial spaces, and facilities across the area. It’s been exciting to see how far we’ve come.
Another big part of our growth story is that my husband recently retired from his previous career and now runs the business alongside me. Together, we’ve built Maid in Battle Creek into not just a cleaning company — but a people-first business that supports our employees, builds lasting relationships with clients, and continues to grow in ways we never expected.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any business owner will tell you, the road hasn’t always been smooth — and ours is no exception. One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced is building and maintaining a strong team. Cleaning, especially at the commercial level, is very physical work that requires not just stamina, but also an eye for detail and a real sense of pride in the job.
Finding people who can consistently meet those standards — and who share our commitment to quality — hasn’t always been easy. There’s a lot more to this work than people often realize, and it takes a special kind of person to do it well day after day. Over time, we’ve learned how to hire more intentionally, train thoroughly, and create a company culture where people feel valued and supported. That’s made a big difference, but staffing has definitely been one of the toughest parts of growing our business.
We also learned quickly that pay is a major factor in attracting and keeping the right people. When we started prioritizing competitive wages that reflect the hard work and skill this job requires, we saw a big difference in the quality of applicants and the long-term commitment from our team.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Maid in Battle Creek, we specialize in professional cleaning services — everything from offices and industrial spaces to more specialized commercial environments. What started as a small, local cleaning business has grown into a trusted name in our community, and we’re incredibly proud of the reputation we’ve built in such a short period of time.
One of the things that truly sets us apart is the way we do business. We don’t require long-term contracts, which many of our clients find refreshing compared to other companies. We believe our quality of service should speak for itself — and it does. Our clients stay with us because they want to, not because they’re locked into an agreement.
We’re also deeply committed to maintaining open, honest communication with everyone we work with. We take the time to build strong relationships and tailor our services to meet each client’s specific needs. That personal approach, combined with our reliability and high standards, is what we’re known for — and it’s what continues to drive our success.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to us is the health and happiness of our employees. They are the backbone of everything we do — without them, there simply wouldn’t be a business. We know how physically demanding this work can be, so we make it a priority to support our team, treat them with respect, and create a positive environment where they feel valued and appreciated.
When our employees are healthy, motivated, and happy, they take pride in their work, and that shows in the level of service we’re able to deliver to our clients. Taking care of our team isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s the reason our company is able to grow, maintain our standards, and continue building strong relationships in the community.
