Community Highlights: Meet Charlette Stachnik of The Roost Consignment Home & The Roost Consignment Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlette Stachnik.

Charlette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I came up with the idea to open a consignment shop 13 years ago. At the time I was a stay at home mom and I wanted to work/do something while the kids were at school but at the same time be available to my kids whenever they needed me.

Also, growing up in Leelanau County I felt that there was a need for another consignment shop and by opening up I hoped to fill that niche.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been always a smooth road. Starting out I leased a 400 square-foot space down a side road in Suttons Bay. Getting people to that space was a bit of a challenge at first. Also getting the consignors and inventory to start up the store.

Another struggle I had over the years is outgrowing my space quickly. I’ve had to move my shop and expand six times over the past 13 years.

Of course, another obstacle that I would think mostly all businesses had was the Covid shut down. I had to close my store up for a few months however, during that time I begin the process of another move, so I was able to utilize that down time quite a bit.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Roost Consignment Home & The Roost Consignment Boutique ?
The Roost Home carries furniture, household items and decor. We select only gently used items to sell in the store.

The home store does offer furniture pick up and delivery for buyers and sellers.

At The Roost Boutique you’ll find men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. Again, all items are hand picked. We have high standards and are looking for fashionable-high quality, items to sell.

What sets us apart from other consignment shops according to many of our customers is our well curated stores, that are easy to look through and have reasonable prices.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Selecting high-quality items that have lots of life left to them is key. Finding a price range to sell items at that makes both the customer and consigner happy is extremely important.

Honesty. We are responsible for thousands of items that belong to other people and they are leaving them in our hands to sell. Building a relationship with the consignors is our main goal. Without their trust, we would not have the inventory we need.
