Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Murray.
Hi Miranda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I knew from a young age I wanted to do hair because every Barbie or doll I owned ended up getting a haircut! When I graduated high school in 2002 I graduated with my cosmetology license as well. I worked in a salon for 10 years and absolutely loved it But one day my husband said let’s open your own salon! We opened MJ‘s named after our children ( Marissa and Jaxon) in September 2012 and we just celebrated our 13 year anniversary! There are four of us that work in the salon Rebekah, Kayley, Alana and myself. When you walk in to MJ‘s, we want you to feel comfortable like you’re just chatting with old friends. We wouldnt be where we are today it was without our amazing clientele!
In 2023 we were voted best hair salon in Livingston County! That was a huge honor! That was the first year I had heard of that contest and we won it! I was over the moon! The happiness, joy and excitement that I felt when I was contacted to say I won is something I wish every salon can feel! We are currently in the voting stage now for 2025! MJ‘s is nominated for best hair salon, and myself for best Stylist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our biggest hurdle was Covid! We were closed almost 3 months here in Michigan, but as soon as we were able to reopen, we did so safely and got back to what we love doing the most making people feel beautiful!
Our community is constantly growing, so I’m thankful we are continuing to grow as well!

We are a family friendly salon. Men women kids everyone’s welcome! Dont have a sitter bring the kiddos! We want you to feel at home when you are at Mjs. We exclusively use Kenra Color. It is gentle on your hair as it formulated with conditioning agents and minimal odor compared to other color lines.
There is no I in team and that’s exactly what we are at Mjs. We help each other out, we bounce ideas off of each other.
We hang out outside of work as we are not JUST coworkers but friends! This year we have had 2 weddings and one more next year and a few girls nights!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory, of course has to do with Hair! I would go with my grandma once a week to get her wash and style as that was our special time together. Her hairstylist was outgoing, friendly, and always had the coolest high heels! I told my grandma I wanted to be like her one day when I grow up. Although I don’t wear high heels because my back will yell at me, lol I became exactly what I wanted to be when I grow up.
