Community Highlights: Meet Gwendolyn Thomas of Dolyn Designs, Weddings and Event Decor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwendolyn Thomas.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been a creative spirit with a deep love for weddings, ever since I was a little girl. So naturally, when it came time to plan my own wedding, I was excited to bring my vision to life. But I quickly realized how difficult it was to find décor that truly matched my style and felt personal. That experience sparked the idea for Dolyn Designs, Wedding and Event Décor — a business built on the belief that every event should feel as unique and special as the person behind it.

What began as a personal passion has grown into a thriving design studio — now 10 years strong — trusted by clients who value beauty, detail, and sophistication. Through dedication, word-of-mouth, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, we’ve transformed from a small startup into an an elevated event design company.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
1. Clients want to see proof of past events — but when you’re just starting, you don’t have one. So I did small styled shoots, collaborate with photographers and planners, or even stage a mock event to build a professional-looking portfolio.

2. Start Upfront Costs-I need a lot of inventory to start the business, like Décor inventory (linens, centerpieces, furniture, floral props, etc.) with is expensive. Also storage, transportation, and maintenance also add up quickly. I connected with some local event rental companies and building relationships, this was a saving grace for me.

3. Building Brand Awareness
Getting my name and company in the market was probably one of the most difficult things. The market is saturated, and standing out is hard without strong marketing. I invested in some social media ads. I also invested in creating a professional logo and a website, which helped me to start crafting my style and branding. It’s important that clients see you as professional business. I’m proud to say that most of my clients nowadays come from referrals.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
