Story & Lesson Highlights with Jayla Smalls of Detroit

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jayla Smalls. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Jayla, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
That I make music because it’s what everybody does and that’s not true, I make music to clear my thoughts and remind myself I feel what I feel musically for a reason.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m IndigoYaj. The stage name plays as my alter ego, who is confident in being relatable and worthy of acceptance despite being far from normal. Just like the color indigo sitting inbetween blue and violet, I don’t fit into categories. IndigoYaj is simply that girl.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
This sounds really weird but I was half city girl half emo. Hip hop and rock music had raised my music palate down to the way I would dress. Before all these genres and categories it was okay to just integrate and just “be”.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
For 10 years I’ve been dealing with Type 1 diabetes. Honestly after my third time being in the hospital because of DKA, I was ready to kick the can for lack of words. Nobody wants to experience the way this takes a complete 180 on your life, your mental, your physical state, and every little thing you do. To the point seeing myself as an artist was at an all time low.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie in the music industry is that it’s woman friendly. The music industry still is heavily misogynistic and double standardized towards us ladies.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Voiceovers. My voice changes around so much I think I’d be a great voice actor.
