Story & Lesson Highlights with Salena Taylor of Jackson

Salena Taylor shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Salena, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Energy is definitely very important to me. Without energy I can’t do all of the things that I am doing now with all of the work that I do.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Salena and I am the proud Founder & Executive Director of Partial to Girls Organization. This Nonprofit is all about families & community. We run a Basic Needs and Baby Pantry Program that helps many people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. We have a Clothing Closet that provides clothing to those in need, a Birthday Program for both Boys and Girls. We don’t want any parent suffering or worrying about their child not being celebrated if they can’t afford it at the time. We also run a hair program so no child has to be the target of bullying for having unkept hair.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Being a mother to twin boys. It was at their birth that I begin to see myself as a strong woman. I saw my patience and endurance and knew that I was equipped with what I needed for the journey of motherhood.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Teen pregnancy and being a high school dropout really set the tone for hardship in my life. It set me back for many years and it took me a very long time to put the pieces of my life back together.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My Family.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Dealing with people who do not genuinely value or care about me
