Corlis Nichols of Benton Harbor on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Corlis Nichols shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Corlis , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’m a solo traveler at heart, and I absolutely love exploring new places on my own. There’s an unmatched sense of peace that comes with the journey.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Corlis Nichols—author, empowerment speaker, and passionate advocate for women impacted by domestic abuse. I provide one-on-one and group sessions for women ready to break the silence and reclaim their voices. I’m also thrilled to be collaborating on an inspiring anthology project alongside a remarkable group of authors.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed I had no choice but to remain silent. I believed that I had to carry the weight of what happened to me, bury it deep, and pretend it never existed.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain when it became too heavy to bear. The moment I released it, I felt an immediate sense of relief and chose to transform it into a tool to help others.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am dedicated to empowering women to break free from the grip of abuse and reclaim their freedom.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m alone, fully immersed in the things I love.
