Meghan McMurphy of Grand Rapids on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Meghan McMurphy and have shared our conversation below.

Meghan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I’ve been working a lot recently but that is nothing new! I recently purchased my first home so I’ve slowly been chipping away at small projects in the meantime. It feels like my life gets busier and busier every year that passes, but I am grateful to continue to pursue my dreams.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Meghan and I’ve been a licensed esthetician since 2017 and have been specializing in laser aesthetics since 2018. Alessia Capelli Salon & Spa is where I have been working since 2022, it started super small in a salon suite and we’ve since upgraded to our first storefront location! I am currently the spa manager and esthetician here. My speciality here is laser hair removal but I also perform various skin treatments. I have a passion for making people feel confident in themselves AND have confidence in their professional. Making people comfortable is my top priority, but delivering great results is also a huge part of my business.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
At this point in my life I feel like a lot of people around me have made me better understand myself, but the biggest one career wise was Alessia, the salon owner. She definitely believed in me and my abilities before I saw any potential in myself. Luckily, I think her instinct was correct because we’ve been doing great!

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think my need for control has held me back most in my life. I do crave routine and don’t like stepping outside of the norm for me, but every year that passes I find myself stepping out of my comfort zone more and more.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I think the career I chose really does allow my personality to shine through which is something I love about it. There’s so many people in the industry that have the same skills, licensing, and experience as I do, but there is not any of us who bring the same experience to the table for any client. Unique things about our personalities is really the glue that holds together a bond with a client, so I am happy to present my real authentic self frequently.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I’m taking time for myself and balancing out work and rest.
