Shanell, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity! I value the integrity of others, so I truly desire for others to value the integrity in me. Integrity is important because people ought to have someone that they can depend on. Trust! Someone who says what they mean, and mean what they say. Someone who makes the vow and keeps it. Someone that can be trusted.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Shanell Henry was born, raised and still resides in Lansing, Michigan. Shanell, formerly known as; Mizz Reality. She has written, recorded and released five full length inspirational Hip Hop projects, as well as three singles.
Shanell Henry is the CEO of Shanell Unique LLC. Author, Influencer, Content Creator, Community Organizer and Lifestyle Blogger of 5Heartbeats; Faith, Family, Friendship, Fitness & Fun. Shanell recently retired from General Motors of 30 years. Shanell serves as the Director of Community Love & Engagement with One Love Global and adult supporter for P.P.Y.A.M (The Peace and Prosperity Youth Action Movement,) a youth led-coalition that advocates for public policy in Ingham County. Shanell actively serves at her place of worship; Abundant Grace Faith Church, as a teacher of the Impact Youth teen ministry. Shanell Henry is also a fit coach for Fit & Fun and lead organizer/motivator of Empower Hour; a spiritual virtual fellowship held monthly.
Shanell Henry is passionate about people, purpose and engaging communities to inspire and empower. She wears many hats and has learned to balance them all delightfully and passionately!
A wife of twenty-eight years to a wonderful man and Entrepreneur; Anthony Henry Sr. A mother of three sons, two daughter in-loves and five grandchildren.
Her joy comes from pursuing and fulfilling her God given purpose. Living life intentionally, authentically and out loud. Longing to impact lives within her reach and capacity.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with Jesus Christ has truly helped shape how I see myself. The trajectory of my life changed immensely when I surrendered my way, for God’s way over 25 years ago. I began to see myself more whole. A purpose bigger than me. Facing that reality that my gifts and talents had more power, under the submission of the ONE who gave the gifts and talents to me. I was created to shine my light in this world, to serve, to love, to walk out purpose. All to bring Glory to God (Jesus) who is the head of my life. This is me.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I miss the purity and unity of extended family gatherings. I grew up where most of my family gathered at Grandma’s house and often. Mother, aunties, cousins and family friends. You could always count on everyone being together for fellowship. We live in a day now, where there appears to be so many distractions. The metaverse! My heart cries out at times for the old days. Physical touch and community in family. I have had opportunities to host gatherings here and there. I miss the organic gatherings.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me. If I can’t be me, I don’t want to be. Shanell is Shanell! Just BE you, don’t be nobody else. You just be yourself…In everything you do, just be yooooou. A line from a song that I wrote and released. LOL Look it up! Just Be.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that people will tell numerous stories of how I made them feel “SEEN and LOVED”. I care that people feel loved and valued when they are around me.
