Good morning Stuart, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I wander around the general vicinity of a path, I always have goals and plans, but things happen that divert me. I generally wander in the right direction though. At least, I think so.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been painting (almost) exclusively in acrylics since 2007, when I started painting under the name stuthepainter. Focusing on composing my paintings using candid photos for reference, my old tagline was, “Paintings of Human Beings, Being Human.”
In 2019/2020 I painted a series of 102 places around Tampa Bay with no people — mostly St. Petersburg, where I lived at the time — and I dropped the tagline.
Currently, I’m working on a series of 52 classic cars. Mostly front ends and rears, I’m going to compile them into a weekly planner in the style of an old school wall calendar.
I also do some commission work randomly.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught me the most about work. He put me to work from a very young age. I didn’t appreciate it at the time, but it made me understand discipline and work ethic. He would say things like (and I’m paraphrasing), “Oh, you’re sick? Well, you can feel like shit at home, or you can feel like shit at work and make money.” Or, “If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late.” He had a lot of little sayings like that. I’m not sure where he got them from, but they just got programmed into my brain, I guess.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
I’ll be honest with you. I didn’t really connect with any of the prompts in this round, so I chose this one because it’s the most relevant I can think of off the top of my head.
Before Kelly and I moved to Michigan from Florida, we were planning on moving to Colorado. As far as cost of living, it would have been a lateral move. I suggested we move to where I was originally from, because we could buy a house for less than the cost of rent in Tampa Bay or Denver area, and I have many family and friends here. Honestly, I didn’t think she would be interested. Anyway, I can’t say that I changed my mind since she was coequal in the decision making, but it was a mind change regarding something important.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Myself.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Sleeping. At least I would try to sleep as little as possible. You know? Get more out of those ten years.
