Good morning Maryse, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Ha! Well to be honest, there’s not a day where I don’t let out a good laugh. But, since July I’ve been recording the remainder of my album, and each session has made me SO PROUD of the creative progress. Even in my sessions, there’s laughter every 5 minutes man. Hahaaa!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maryse ‘MYSTA RY’ Gaines, and I am the bomb diggity of Detroit’s east side! I am a Performing Artist, Songwriter, Dance Instructor, and Beautician. The art of performance is truly my gift, along with having my own unique sound. My music is R&B/Dance driven, while flexing my Rap capabilities. Through my family, I first began purely as a dancer. But, by time I got to 5th grade I joined choir. That progressed to me being in choir until my Senior year in high-school. We are preparing for my FIRST ALBUM ‘LET EM’ SEE IT’ to arrive on September 12TH. Beyond excited!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
First and foremost, God. Along with him, my family always knew who I’d be to this day. Myself, it took a few glimpses at my plain view and conversations with God to deeply understand acceptance and love.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, a few times. Transparently, I almost gave up right before recording my album. I lost everything, and felt the light in me dim out. But what saved me, was simply changing the light bulb. Hahaaa! And truly shifting my focus to go get what I need and deserve. Sacrificing all old methods, and welcome the new.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, all the way. I just don’t be showcasing my personal bees-knees! It’s not needed to be understood.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Mixing procrastination and fear as a drink.
